Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, The Night Agent is a sophisticated, character-based, action-thriller centering on a low level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings -- until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.

Critics Consensus

Bingeable as a beach read and just as forgettable, The Night Agent is a routine spy thriller told with commendable bravado.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The Shield creator, Shawn Ryan, does his best to put some texture and moral tension in this fast-paced series, but at best this a solid, unspectacular run-and-gun narrative that at least has a zesty female counterpart. Apr 13, 2023 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News A solid conspiracy movie/series throwback involving two lethal killers, a bombing in a subway, a mole within the White House and a newbie FBI agent who’s in over his head. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 29, 2023 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times In the second half of the series, the action is ramped up and the plot twists bend credulity close to the breaking point — but we stick with it, and we’re rewarded with some payoffs. Rated: 3/4 Mar 25, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) There’s no denying that The Night Agent, while with its many flaws, is a lot more enjoyable and balances the many subplots without making them too complicated. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu While there are pacing issues and it takes some time for the show to hit its stride, ‘The Night Agent’ ticks along busily enough to ensure you do not ask too many questions Aug 27, 2023 Full Review Alison de Souza The Straits Times (Singapore) Basso’s Sutherland is a pretty straightforward nice guy. Still, it is easy to cheer for him and his budding romance with Rose. If you are in the market for a popcorn political thriller, this is it. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Maicon K Too much conspiracy in one season only. Producers should learn that they don’t need 10 episodes to tell a history that needs only 3 or 4. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Matt A The Night Agent season 1 is a basic, cliché-ridden spy thriller that brings nothing new to the table. The plot is familiar, the twists are predictable, and the supporting characters are forgettable. The only saving grace is Gabriel Basso, who does an impressive job balancing vulnerability and strength in difficult situations, making his character somewhat engaging. Unfortunately, season 2 strips away even that, turning him into a generic action hero and removing the last interesting element of the series. If you want something actually worth watching, skip this and check out The Recruit. Or better yet, if you have Apple+, watch the brilliant Slow Horses—a masterclass in how to do espionage right. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Nazryn F The series starts off intriguing, but by the end, it becomes just another typical spy show. That’s not to say it’s bad, just predictable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Damian W Actual trash. Low quality TV created by a right wing conspiracy nut, who murdered people as a contractor for blackwater. Don't waste your time on this garbage. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Derek M Had us binge watching since episode one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Audience Member Just unimaginable plots, they over exaggerated every situation. Too many side plots that lead to the most unimportant subject. Frustrating and unbelievable. Couldn't finish it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
