Dan Chase absconded from the CIA and lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past. The FBI's Harold Harper is called on to hunt him down because of his complicated past with the rogue fugitive. When Chase proves to be more difficult to apprehend than the authorities expected, a highly trained special ops contractor is sent to pursue him as well. While on the run, Chase rents a room from Zoe McDonald, who draws on reserves she never knew she had to survive the day when she learns the truth about her new tenant.

Season starts off as a sophisticated action show with an unusual main character, played brilliantly by Jeff Bridges. By the end of episode 3 it has gone off track and the second half of the season is a completely different show - mostly long, boring, pretentious, dialogue and bizarre interactions between the characters that the showrunner appears to be trying to loading with meaning but across as more General Hospital than anything else. I took a year break after episode 4 and have picked it up again to try season 2...working my way through the last couple episodes of season 1 is painful. Every scene with Zoe is particularly incomprehensible.

The only thing keeping me from giving "The Old Man" a 5 star rating is the character of Zoe McDonald. Zoe's character drags every scene she is in, and I find myself fast forwarding until she is off the screen. I really dig the series and Jeff Bridges is fantastic. I just hope the character of Zoe is not a major player in season 2. She has no purpose and reminds me of someone that is completely out of their element but continues to drag the rest of the cast down with her. Almost caused me to stop watching the series.
