Este spin-off se apoya por completo en la interpretación de un Colin Farrell desatado, irreconocible y magnífico, que da vida a Oz con una mezcla de patetismo, brutalidad y ambición desbordante. Cristin Milioti no se queda atrás, aportando una intensidad que hace que cada escena que comparte con Farrell tenga chispa. Juntos construyen una tensión que crece episodio a episodio. La serie sabe muy bien cuál es su duración ideal: ocho capítulos que no se alargan innecesariamente ni pierden el ritmo. Al contrario que otros productos que estiran la trama hasta perder el foco, The Penguin va al grano, sin perder ese aire sórdido y violento que encaja tan bien en la Gotham de Matt Reeves. La ambientación es excelente, oscura y decadente, como debe ser, y el tono mezcla drama de gánsteres clásico con elementos casi teatrales de tragedia personal. Es cierto que hay personajes secundarios que apenas tienen espacio para brillar y que no todos los capítulos mantienen el mismo nivel, pero eso no quita que la serie, en conjunto, tenga muchísima fuerza. Hay momentos realmente potentes. No necesitas ver a Batman para notar el poder, la amenaza y las luchas de poder que se respiran en cada rincón de Gotham. Si lo que buscabas era una historia de Gotham contada desde las alcantarillas, aquí tienes una con carácter, sangre y ambición. Una serie que no necesita capas ni orejas puntiagudas para dejar huella. This spin-off leans entirely on Colin Farrell’s unhinged, unrecognizable, and magnificent performance, bringing Oz to life with a mix of pathos, brutality, and overwhelming ambition. Cristin Milioti isn’t far behind, delivering an intensity that sparks in every scene she shares with Farrell. Together, they build a tension that escalates with each episode. The show knows exactly how long it should be: eight episodes that don’t drag or lose momentum. Unlike other productions that stretch the plot until it loses focus, The Penguin gets straight to the point, maintaining that gritty, violent tone that fits perfectly in Matt Reeves’ Gotham. The atmosphere is excellent—dark and decaying, just as it should be—and the tone blends classic gangster drama with near-theatrical touches of personal tragedy. Sure, some supporting characters barely get a chance to stand out, and not every episode hits the same high notes, but the series as a whole is packed with impact. There are truly powerful moments. You don’t need Batman to feel the power, fear, and the constant struggle for control running through every corner of Gotham. If what you wanted was a Gotham story told from the sewers, here you have one full of character, blood, and ambition. A series that doesn’t need capes or pointy ears to leave a mark. But that’s not how this story starts. So let’s go back to the beginning, technically the end of The Batman Movie. Gotham is in shambles after the devastating flood that could have destroyed the whole city. Batman is nowhere to be found and the criminal underworld is in flux because of Carmine Falcone’s death. The head honcho of head honchos is gone so the streets are in limbo waiting for someone to make a move. Some people see the lay of the land only as problems to be solved but those with ambition see opportunity. That crossroad is where we find the story’s main character, The Penguin.
