What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depicting Gotham through bone-breaking punches rather than popping onomatopoeia, The Penguin is a grounded crime saga given gravitas by Colin Farrell and a scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.

Kelly Lawler USA Today It's a fully realized story all on its own, which is what every TV show should be, spinoff or not. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Craig Zobel has a strong grasp of The Penguin’s tone, keeping it shadowy but not grim where the characters’ psychic wounds drive all their choices and the action. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times "The Penguin” feels mechanical and recycled, constructed rather than imagined. Mob-movie clichés about honor and service are recited in lifeless dialogue and then recited again; the action often undercuts them but not in any witty or exciting way. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast Outstanding performances and an epic, brutal storyline make the limited series a crime thriller of the highest caliber and a masterpiece within the genre. Rated: 5/5 Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Jeff York The Establishing Shot Can we just give Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti their Emmys now? Rated: 4/4 Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Brandon Avery Just My Opinion Reviews Near Perfection! So many twists, turns, and shocking reveals! Performances from everyone is chilling! Show deserves all the awards! Rated: 9.5/10 Nov 16, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

jason c A phenomenal series filled with such compelling characters that bring their own unique stories fueled by the troubled world of Gotham city. A Classic series that shall be remembered. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Nicholas F Was such an awesome series ended how it should have didn't at all feel rushed. 8 episodes was the perfect amount for this series. Especially doing a good job with the tease at the end of the show. **Spoiler Warning** A lot of people will be mad at the fact that Vic is killed but honestly as unfortunate as that scene was it was 100% needed in order to remind the audience of what Oz is. This scene in itself both breaks the bond the audience may have got with Oz while watching as well as reminding the audience at the end of the day he is still a villain. This leaves the audience kind of unsatisfied watching the rest of the show play out but then the Bat Signal is what people were searching for. Someone who will bring justice. Great set up it just sucks that we will have to wait 2 years to see Batman but that doesn't affect the hype associated with that scene. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Andre S Very few shows manage to deeply engage you from the very first episode, but The Penguin does just that. What I appreciate most is that it avoids the silly, quirky tone often found in typical Batman shows, and it doesn’t portray the character as a clown. Instead, it offers a compelling look into who The Penguin truly is and how he became the character we know. The writing is exceptional, and Colin Farrell is the perfect choice for the role—he is The Penguin. Every episode is stellar, making it one of my all-time favorite shows. It's that good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Dream F Amazing Cast! Milioti deserves awards for this as does Farrell. Brilliantly acted. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Audience Member So here's the thing Colin Farrel plays a great role as that new york kinda mob boss on the rise...that's about as far as this show goes for me and think is hugely overated because of that very facet, just same old crime style series, I just felt bored throughout to the point where I just wanted the show to end,I missed parts of episodes through sheer boredom 🤪 fk all happens! Just penguin hobbling about avoiding death..I feel like I'm the only one speaking any sense in these reviews 🤷‍♂️ I would of give 2 stars however I seen 95% rating 🤣 what a joke! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Jack L Headlined by a transformative performance by Colin Farrell, The Penguin is a gripping dive into Gotham's criminal underworld. While the makeup and prosthetics are flawless, it's Farrell's magnetic charisma that makes you almost root for the monstrous Oswald Cobblepot. The show introduces standout characters like Sofia Falcone and delivers a surprisingly emotional arc with Victor, whose story becomes the heart of the series. A dark, brilliant thriller that pays homage to classic crime dramas, it’s undoubtedly my show of the year so far Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
