What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depicting Gotham through bone-breaking punches rather than popping onomatopoeia, The Penguin is a grounded crime saga given gravitas by Colin Farrell and a scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.

Kelly Lawler USA Today It's a fully realized story all on its own, which is what every TV show should be, spinoff or not. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Craig Zobel has a strong grasp of The Penguin’s tone, keeping it shadowy but not grim where the characters’ psychic wounds drive all their choices and the action. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times "The Penguin” feels mechanical and recycled, constructed rather than imagined. Mob-movie clichés about honor and service are recited in lifeless dialogue and then recited again; the action often undercuts them but not in any witty or exciting way. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Jeff Beck The Blu Spot It's a riveting, compelling, and rather entertaining look at Oz's desperate attempts to become the kingpin of Gotham, dealing with a multitude of setbacks and surprises on the way that have him trying to out-maneuver his opponents at every turn. Rated: 4/5 Apr 29, 2025 Full Review Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) Masterful work by Colin Farrell despite loads of makeup elevates this tale above the normal action series. Rated: A- Mar 31, 2025 Full Review Sarah Ward Concrete Playground A grounded waddle into the supervillain realm, and boasting exceptional performances from Farrell and Milioti, this is comics-to-screen storytelling at its best. NTnoah T For this to be a comic villain series, this is Oz's rise to power and to have control in the corrupt city of Gotham as the kingpin he was meant to become. This is also an unbelievable follow up with Matt Reeves iteration of The Batman franchise as this version of the Penguin is now the most notorious villains of Gotham that we know him as. I just wonder where this goes next for the character with Batman! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Ryan H. Colin Farrell crushed this villainous role! He will have you convinced that he deserves sympathy, the same way he convinces everyone else in this show. But you’ll see his true colors. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review T.J. W. Wow a character I never thought I cared about kept me captivated for an entire show. What an unbelievable display of storytelling and character development well done. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review atlas s The first three episodes are one of the best TV I've ever seen. Then at episode four till the final eighth it becomes the most generic gangster movie slop you can imagine. It's like they changed the concept of the show entirely. What happened? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Dhruv S The penguin takes what most would consider a boring premise and turns it into an intricate well crafted narrative surrounding the underbelly of gotham after the events of the batman. Colin Farrell spearheads this show with a powerhouse of a performance aided by a robust supporting cast. The plot is restrained but will reward those who follow the narrative it is setting up throughout. Well written dialogue smartly spliced with violence keeps one engaged throughout. The production design flows seamlessly with the Gotham crafted by Matt Reeves. This show is simply phenomenal. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Jon B Great storyline, great characters all around, great acting and just a great show. Farrell puts in such a layered performance of a wholeheartedly unlikeable character and sways your feeling towards the character from hatred to empathy all the way through.
