Still a reasonably enjoyable show, but not quite up the the thrills of prior seasons. The swings from protagonists to overtly narcissistic sociopaths were jilted. Likewise some swings in the opposite direction seemed forced and occured over a short period of time. A sociopath who murdered one of their best friends (a single parent) in cold blood a few years ago is unlikely to become introspective following the death of a family member. I would expect drug dealers are comfortable with the concept of death via misadventure and would generally blame user error for drug related deaths, not themselves. The theme of "police bad" was also ramped up this season which was somewhat cringeworthy

Awful writing, awful dialogue, riddled with plot holes and unfinished character arcs what a fall from grace after being the hard hitting drama it's become a soap opera with out of touch themes and shallow characters. "WHO'S MAN GONNA DUN?" Is the meme of the show.

There were lots of loose threads to tie up and a fitting goodbye between the two Top Boys to cram into the last series and I think they did it well. The critics have loved it and I agree - some of the viewers are less convinced but you can't please everyone; dragging it out into more episodes and satisfying all the grumblers would've had other people complaining too. The ending was bittersweet but with a couple of happy(ish) endings. They were the monsters, and never the food.

The writer lost sight of what made the previous seasons of this show so great. Very dull story with no real motives. Lacking the usual grit we have come to expect from this show.

      • Oct 06, 2023

Yes. A very fitting final season to a brilliant show. When you start to think it's getting just too bleak and gritty, it redeems itself with a perceptive dose of humanity. But you didn't really expect any happy-ever-afters did you? Of couse not.

This has to be the best set of series I've ever seen. Having lived close to that kind of lifestyle, I found myself on a rollercoaster of emotions. It's gripping, high speed pace carries the observer through a multitude of current, social issues. Sexual orientation, drugs, grief, love, poverty and teenage life. Plus much more. It's as close to real life as it gets. Season 5 is just as good as the other four seasons. A close up slice of suburban black culture in London. This is what makes it one hundred percent, original and untouchable. The soundtrack also showcases some of the best, British, up and coming artists. Writer Ronan Bennett has certainly done his homework. Someone had to write this story and apparently, Mr Bennett has hit the target. As an aspiring creative writer myself, it has been inspirational. I hope Top Boy continues alongside the ever changing street life of our amazing city, London. Cheers Ronan, all the best 🙏🏽

Up until the last series it has been absolutely on point but the last one felt like they run out of budget and had to rushed it,there was enough material to go to 9-10 episodes.why would jak steal the food if she wanted out knowing how sully and dushane are? Lauren all of a sudden on H then dead wtf.the Irish connect was desperate. Thr riot didn't make sense, kieran getting let loose by the home office like that really,Aaron leaving his bro behind to go Leeds uni.lithe and lizzy dipping like that.with all the time you had to write this is turned Into a nonsense car crash

Looking at the season 5 holistically, I feel that the writers who grew up in the decaying patriarchy have tried to make topical amends by making this show TRULY, about empowered, sharp female characters and idiotic, bad decision-making male antiheroes. Shelley, Mandy, Jaq, Lizzie and Lithe - trigger events in this series - Shelley by asking Dushane for investment, Mandy and Jaq by starting a Summerhouse riot, Jaq by stealing the drugs and trying to redeem herself, Lizzie and Lithe by sailing off into the sunset with all the money and somehow not getting caught. You can even add a little unnamed girl who presumably dies by being hit by the police car - her tragic death switches peaceful protests into a bloody riot. These women, representing all generations, are the goddesses of Chaos, sparking various happenings and essentially removing themselves from the drug dealing circus. They're the true winners. The men on the other hand - Sully and Dushane in particular and the Irish gangsters, Si and Kieron to a lesser extent, are reactive, bloodthirsty, sloppy, lacking foresight or just plainly stupid. Starting wars, creating suffering, knowing no empathy, having no forgiveness. It's a parallel to what the men in high positions of power have done to our world. By the end of the series, I genuinely wanted Sully and Dushane to be put out of their misery, i.e. die or get locked up. They used to be somewhat likeable, they used to have depth, they used to have personality. Now, I don't see any redeeming features there. Stef is an interesting one as he and Erin symbolize the young generation. They're smart, they're sharp and they know what kind of future they want and how to achieve it. And It will not be achieved by giving into peer pressure and submitting to the norms laid out by their environment. So overall, I loved it and hated it at the same time. Though it's always great when a TV show makes you think and digs a little below the surface level.

They wrapped up the series but still left us on the edge all the why to the very end.

Top Boy as a whole was absolutely brilliant and i will miss watching it, but this season felt so rushed. The possibilities of all the storylines could of easily made a couple more seasons. Nether the less i will always enjoy re-watching it.
