What to Know

Critics Consensus

A twisty thriller that never quite comes together, Truth Be Told's commitment to the true crime at its center is less interesting or engaging than the family drama orbiting in the periphery.

Michael Idato Sydney Morning Herald Truth Be Told is patchy at times, windy at others, though some of those cracks are smoothed over by script-elevating performances from Spencer, Paul and Elizabeth Perkins. Dec 13, 2019 Full Review Allison Keene Paste Magazine It's interesting, but it drags; it's enjoyable while you watch, but you don't rush to return to it. It's just fine -- but it's not essential TV that you need to pay for a streaming platform to enjoy. Rated: 8.0/10 Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Pilot Viruet Observer With a stacked cast and a premise that gives way to a wealth of ideas, Truth Be Told could have been a solid story about many things. However, Truth Be Told doesn't work and instead it's the rare crime mystery where I don't care about getting to the end. Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Diane Carson KDHX (St. Louis) [Relys] too often on implausible revelations and intrusive podcast recordings that halt momentum. Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Prahlad Srihari Firstpost There are hints to a larger story which maybe more revelatory than the one that is currently being told. Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Isaac Feldberg Fortune Feels in line with Apple's other recently launched series in that it's a decent idea with no clue how to execute itself. Henery X As a creative writer, I'm attracted to storytelling that makes me think. Sure, being entertained is a must, but it's not all I seek to find. I also love to be encouraged and enlightened as well. Truth Be Told offers all three e's. The entire series presented 30 episodes that left me pleased. It made me proud to be able to call myself a creative writer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review Laquita J Late to show it was great cast lots of different turns finding out what you didn't expect from each character. All the while addressing real life situations Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Benny C An entertaining show Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/23 Full Review Bodhi R I started watching for Olivia Spencer. I'll probably keep watch for her. I'm just learning this role is a return to her roots as she started out in crime drama. The "white boy" in prison is also a good character. Everyone else is pretty lackluster. Reading a few other reviews... it clicked that what this is, is "soapy". It has some "fresh" ideas, like the podcast, the large black family, underlying race relations... it just doesn't reach its full potential. The intro sequence is pretty neat and about 40% of the show is 4 or 5 star. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Rusty J some level of entertainment in year 1 but story seemed contrived. Not well written. But ok entertainment. Will attempt season 2 barely and see if there is striking improvement Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/23 Full Review el h This deserves way more stars than it's been given. Season 1 had everything-superb cast, interesting plot line, and mystery! I'm shocked it's rated so low. A really great ensemble cast gave this show justice. The mystery kept me hooked until the end. Even the little red herrings sprinkled throughout the season worked so well with the overall mystery. I'm so glad it's been renewed for a 3rd and I haven't even gotten through the 2nd season. This has been a really good pop culture-driven series about some extremely popular topics (true crime, podcast, real mystery to solve). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
