A graduate of the National Film and Television School, director Toby Haynes first started getting people to notice his work with his short film "Lost and Found" in 2003. A year later he had his first professional gig helming an episode for the television anthology show "Coming Up," for which he was subsequently nominated for a Directors Guild of Great Britain award in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Short Film category. In 2007, he directed an episode of "Hollyoaks," the controversial though popular teen drama program. He next directed several episodes of the kid-focused spy show "M.I. High," and later worked on the similar "Spooks: Code 9" and the dark fantasy show "Being Human." The director's love of science fiction and fantasy would be best utilized, however, for his job on the newly-revamped version of "Doctor Who," starring Matt Smith as the intrepid cosmic explorer. Haynes's work on the show, starting with the season five two-part finale, was widely acclaimed and his dark style set the visual tone for episodes to follow, including the following Christmas special and the season six two-part opener. Haynes has also directed episodes of the crime drama "Wallander" and the modern incarnation of "Sherlock," created by "Doctor Who" writer Steven Moffat.
