Nathan Lee Village Voice The Falls turns cinema into a puzzle or game-one that Greenaway continues to play, with increasing indifference to the amusement of lesser minds. Audience Member The culmination of Greenaway's short films up to this point. A humorous, Borgesian meditation on Ornithology. I quite enjoyed how references to his previous films popped up on occasion, such as when "Vertical Features Remake" was playing on a projector. The film is simply too long, but it is bursting at the seams with jokes and ideas. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review joe m Odd in an interesting way but yet not compelling enough for me to sit through 3 1/4 hours worth of odd. Fast forwarded through most of it so I'm making my rating based on snippets of pauses - each one of which was mildly different from the other with a character's who name starts with Fall and who each has some avian attraction/incidents that messes with their life. Probably better than the rating i'm giving, but I just don't have time for this degree of odd, and at time pretentious, humor. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The Violent Unknown Event (V.U.E.) has struck a large number of people causing physical disabilities, immortality and imparting upon them the ability to speak strange new languages. Many people feel that birds are somehow involved. Over the course of this 3 hour "documentary", Greenaway profiles 92 victims of the V.U.E., all of whom have last names beginning with "Fall". Despite it's massive running time and deliberately repetitive nature, I really loved this. I can't say that I watched all 3 hours with intense concentration, but the effect of this is kind of similar to Michael Nyman's minimalist score. Patterns emerge that create a sort of meta entertainment value. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Irritatingly brilliant. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange and hypnotic. At the onset you cringe at three hours of counting up to 92 examples of "Violent Unknown Event" victims, but after a while you get into it, and Greenaway's deadpan humour. Like watching a full lenght movie version of a Monty Pyhthon sketch, with the humor turned even more dry and intellectual. A very demanding film, but well worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I could see aspects of Peter Greenaway's style throughout this slow and plodding piece, but I felt like this was definitely a chore and a struggle to get through. Worth a shot if you have 3 hours just to experience something completely different in the realm of film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
