Test T I tried to watch this on DVD recently. The dialog is Japanese but there are also English subtitles. The first thing I noticed when I loaded the disc was the odd menu with large words scrolling in from the right. When the word 'PLAY' appeared I pressed enter and the movie started! The film is very stylish and artistic, and at times is extremely vibrant and colourful. However, it feels more like you are visiting an art gallery than watching a film which I found strange. To be honest, it's not my kind of film at all. I was expecting something like an Asian Matrix movie, and this is definitely not that. I quickly became bored with it, and struggled to maintain my attention. Yes, there are subtitles, but they do little to make sense of it all, and just serve as a series of cryptic clues to further confuse you. In an interview on disc 2, one of actors describes Casshern as being like 'grasping a cloud' when he first encountered it. For a Japanese audience, this film might be very good, but I can't recommend it for a mainstream UK audience. It certainly required more knowledge than I have in order to understand and appreciate it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Audience Member I purchased this movie after seeing it once but I almost never watch it -- Instead, this is the insanely rare case of purchasing something because it Deserves to be purchased. Casshern is one of the most unique works of cinema ever, as on one hand, it's an absolute master-class in artistic vision (all the way down to the absolutely stellar musical score), and on the other hand, it's an intensely brutal depiction of the horrors of war and the tragedy of those killed within it. Because of this, Casshern is actually one of the most intentionally unpleasant viewing experiences, constantly bouncing between the surreal, the brutal and the heartbreaking. Oh, and the ending might be the most somber of any movie I can think of, with the implied truth of the final events being the absolute worst imaginable, and the ending revelation showcasing the unrealized connection between the "villain" and the hero is a very intense emotional punch to the gut. However, I love it because it achieves almost all of these flawlessly, with many of the plot-beats unexpected and impactful. Some of these plot-beats are also inexplicable to some degree, which is why I don't give this a five-star rating -- While the story is woefully tragic, the execution of it does sometimes fall into the "And then THIS happened, and then THIS happened" trope, but since the more impactful emotional-beats are unique in setup, I more than give these a pass. I do strongly recommend this to anyone, so long as you can take being miserable for a bit - if you value artistic expression and raw (yet largely-focused) emotion, then this movie is god-tier in regards to both. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review ronnie m Futuristic Japanese SciFi Movie that delivers to those who love the genre. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this film back when it came out. I was so excited I bought a port from Japan and had to change the region code on my DVD Player. This movie is stunning in so many ways. The graphics may not hold up as well and I would have liked but the visuals and story are amazing. This is 1 of 2 films that encouraged me to go to college for film. The story always has me sitting there during the credits in deep contemplation. It's deep and worth it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Takes too long to get going. Confused and quite boring once it does. The odd visual styling doesn't improve the film either. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A terrible mix including the myth of Frankenstein (there is even an Igor), 1984 and the Nazi holocaust and an ultra-violent video game a la Final Fantasy, cooked for advocating in favor of world peace (?). Also, terrible monologues, the typical Japanese over-drama and an OST to be burnt. Just giving it some points for its aesthetic which I don't like but I can see the effort on it, as it was also done in "300". Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
