TIME Magazine What Hemingway wrote as an interlude of amorous flutes and distant drums, Producer David 0. Selznick has scored for brass. Jan 23, 2013 Full Review Philip Roth The New Republic Perhaps what is most irritating about the film is that too many times an exciting scene of Hemingway's is shucked out in favor of a distressingly inferior one invented (if I may indulge the Muse a moment) by Ben Hecht, who is responsible for the script. Jan 23, 2013 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Sweep and frankness alone don't make a great picture; and Farewell suffers from an overdose of both. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review André Bazin L'Éducation Nationale So A Farewell to Arms has become a "war movie." But if, forgetting for a moment the comparison with the novel, we judge it from this point of view, our reservations give way to a certain admiration. Dec 8, 2021 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine This long and often boring tearjerker is a disappointing remake of a 1932 film based on Ernest Hemingway's novel. Nov 7, 2019 Full Review Isabel Quigly The Spectator This attempt to make the audience feel what the lovers were feeling failed because even to the least experienced in love it was plainly an artificial and external alteration. Lanfranco C At the end My opinion is that it is a rotten war movie and a too drammatic love story. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Victor T Jennifer Jones makes this remake memorable. Cinematography is superb. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review SICKS6SIX I scored the original 90% this offering 9%, what a hash of a film if ever there was one, if you like the original you will hate this soapy floppy waste of film, Rock Hudson is terrible as is Co star, the story wanders around like a drunken soldier trying not to find a war, it is terrible, Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/19/22 Full Review steve d Pointless remake that has some good performances but pails in comparison to the original in every way. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my all time favorite movies, especially in the romance genre. Great acting. The black and white adds to the allure. Since the longer movie is popular today, this will satisfy that "I wanted more" feeling. Get popcorn, a blanket and your lover and check it out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the earliest adaptations of Ernest Hemingway that was to be a sure fire success at the Box Office with Rock Hudson. The film definitely too long hand many great qualities & due to the Author experiencing much of this the story had real authenticity. The stories gets going half way & has many twists many tragic. Critics seemed to strongly dislike the film but I haven't seen the original 1930's version though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
