Its surprisingly structured depiction of this relationship and its many private rituals and performances, which the film's unforgiving style continually strips bare Go to Full Review

Swanberg and Gerwig also have a gift for constructing the kind of moments rarely seen in contemporary American independent film. Go to Full Review

This movie belongs to its stars, who also wrote and produced. You can't say their acting is good or bad because they are not really acting. They're just being themselves, pubic hair and all. Go to Full Review

The tight focus on these two people does cross the line from careful attention into claustrophobic narcissism. Go to Full Review

[Greta] Gerwig and [Joe] Swanberg's movie is dangerously honest about the territorial dynamics of relationships and the confusion we're left with when they end. Go to Full Review

Dave S Jun 26 Enjoyment of Night and Weekends is probably very much dependent on the viewer’s feelings about mumblecore movies in general. Shot on what would appear to be a shoestring (and a frayed shoestring at that) budget, it is the story of Mattie (Greta Gerwig) and James (Joe Swanberg), a young couple trying to navigate their way through a long-distance relationship. It’s really that simple. Those who can handle the bargain basement production values will find something of value in the movie, which feels real right from the opening scene. Those who shudder at the idea of watching a movie that appears to be shot on a discarded cellphone (replete with way too many tight closeups) would best be advised to avoid the whole thing, unless they’re interested in seeing Gerwig’s directing debut…well, co-directing debut…whatever. See more Georgan G 05/03/2024 3.25 stars. Watching this long distance relationship is the ideal character-driven plot. In fact, my guess is that almost all the dialogue is ad libbing. See more David C 01/03/2024 I'm no expert, but this film presents a different kind of realism--a realism that is a kind of raw, emotional observation from the perspective of a fly on the wall. To be allowed to see the couple's inner world, and especially Mattie's (played by the talented Greta Gerwig), is a rare glimpse into what is usually hidden. See more steve d 01/18/2023 The production value is weak but Greta Gerwig is (as always) fun. Her fans will find a lot to like. See more 06/01/2018 *yawn* Another mumblecore film; the proliferation of inexpensive digital filmmaking has brought us many. While this one is better than a few, it's not by much. It lacks an interesting plot, intelligent dialogue, and smooth tripod shots; difficult to find in these kind of films. See more 04/28/2015 The critics gushed with admiration for this personal examination of a relationship; if you can stand the rambling sentiments of the two star-directors, then this movie is for you.
