As Nicholas Torrent (Ralph Morgan), the owner of a previously missing piece of an extremely rare manuscript, prepares to sell his valuable possession, he turns up dead inside his stately home. Bookseller and occasional sleuth Joel Sloane (Robert Montgomery) and his wife, Garda (Rosalind Russell), investigate the murder. Unfortunately for the Sloanes, the list of suspects is quite long, given the wealthy Torrent's many family members and associates.

Ted B @Movieaddicted 06/08/2024 3.5 stars. First, I will confess my bias: I like the 'whodunit' genre of the 1930s and 1940s, like the "Thin Man" series. This film didn’t measure up to that series, but it was good nonetheless. I especially loved the chemistry between Rosalind Russell and Robert Montgomery. It had some traces of the love/hate dynamic perfected by Tracy and Hepburn. The synopsis sums up the plot pretty well. Because it did a good job of holding the 'who did it' aspect to the end of the film, I gave it that extra half star. See more 06/04/2014 The chemistry between Bob Montgomery and Roz Russell make this routine mystery a fun view. This was Rosalind's last film as a B level actress, The Women was her next picture and she soared to the top ranks. See more 06/02/2014 MGM B movie from that magic year 1939, feels more like an A pic See more 07/23/2008 Not nearly as good as the Thin Man series that it mimics, but still very entertaining. See more 07/22/2008 not bad murder-mystery See more 12/14/2007 Pure awesome. One of the very best Thin Man knockoffs. Montgomery and Russell were one of the best screen teams of the 1930s, and their chemistry and banter is at its best here. See more Read all reviews
