Critics Consensus

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds exhibit plenty of chemistry, but they're let down by The Proposal's devotion to formula.

Abdón C Nov 13 The Proposal is a film where the dialogue flows naturally and artistically, with a professional touch in every scene featuring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. The humor feels somewhat simulated due to the American cultural context, where audiences tend to absorb the film by following all its artistic cues. In contrast, the Spanish dub comes across as funny almost all the time, since the language and situations reflect humor familiar to Latin audiences from school or casual interactions—acting as an absolute comedic mirror. Ryan stands out for his vocal performance. Although his facial expressions do not necessarily convey nervousness or fear—perhaps just a hint of anxiety—he skillfully blends seriousness with sarcasm, which is central to his character. His voice projects confidence, effectively challenging Sandra’s superior role as a recognized and intimidating boss. Sandra, on the other hand, portrays a balanced woman who frequently shows frustration in her interactions with Ryan throughout the film. Her smile, striking and oscillating between joy and cynicism, perfectly captures her desperate charisma as she struggles not to be deported. The pacing of the film feels fast but digestible, perfectly timed to highlight the funniest scenes. It is highly effective, especially considering that today’s audiences rarely have the patience to wait—The Proposal keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. Scene transitions are strong, showcasing Sandra and Ryan at their best moments. The ending is truly remarkable—it’s as if you turn off the lights in a room and a pure beam of light remains shining. This moment often brings tears to fans, as the seriousness of the relationship suddenly feels very real. I highly recommend this film to everyone, regardless of age. It acts as a mirror for the challenges any relationship may face, and it might even be worth analyzing before getting married. See more Monic Kenya M Oct 22 Sandra bullock's, Ryan Reynolds have great chemistry and deliver as usual as is Betty white. Good comedy definitely worth a watch if you are in fir some good laughs See more Jonathan K Sep 28 The whole immigration setup is laughably dumb. None of it would ever happen, and the “solution” they’re chasing is just as ridiculous. Like, she could literally just leave, work from Canada, and we're good here. But fine, maybe remote work wasn't invented yet. So, ignoring the nonsense of the setup for moment, the softening of the characters over the course of the story feels surprisingly organic. It works because the power dynamic gets flipped, and once that happens, Sandra Bullock's character has to find a new way of being, which opens the door for the romance to feel believable. Still, the setup stays dumb. He’s apparently willing to risk five years in prison so she doesn’t have to go back to… Canada. Canada! And when the immigration officer shows up at the wedding we've reached peak absurdity. Also, the office staff watching the final scene go down like it's the center of their universes and everyone is so supportive... corny, cringe, ew. At least the leads are cute and charismatic and have chemistry, so there’s that. See more Janet D @DrJanet Aug 29 I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's a great rom-com!
