Hank Sartin Time Out Rated: 4/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader The story plays out with an absolute minimum of dialogue, and the visual gags are highly inventive. In a comedy market dominated by crudity, sarcasm, and smug pop-culture references, laughs this pure hit like lightning. Aug 7, 2009 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It's not terrifically funny, but then how could it be? The influence of Jacques Tati abides in the material, without his sunniness. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 6, 2009 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) A delight. Rated: 3/4 May 24, 2011 Full Review David Cornelius DVDTalk.com It's impossible not to love these weirdos. Rated: 4/5 Oct 21, 2009 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) Funny, inventive, extremely touching and never cruel. It flirts with tragedy, without becoming morbid. wilbur k "Flying High in April ... Shot Down in May" Life takes twists and turns and you never know where it will take you. I came so close to bailing on this movie - several times. I found some of the slap-stick humor surrounding the woman's injuries was squeamishly uncomfortable. But there was just something about this plot. I was hoping that somehow it would come together at the end; all neat with a pretty ribbon on top (Hollywood style). I was hoping there would be a plot. Naw, not so much. But, maybe that is part of the charm of this Charlie Chaplin-esque/ Buster Keaton-esque film; unconventional. Part of the reason I stuck it out - on a personal level? this flick struck home. I was a social dancer too, but an "accident" (in the form of a pandemic) took my dance away. Took my life away too, because I lived for dance. Because of that "accident" I have not danced with anyone for over two years. I could dance - if I complied with "the rules", but for personal reasons - and the quirks of life - I'm still months away from returning to the dance floor - more so, because of one little bit of bad luck led to another - much like in this movie. Is there a message in this film? Don't give up. But even if you don't give up - life can still suck. If you do give up - like the guy waiting for the train - you may still find happiness (if you don't die). If there is a silver lining to this film - it can be found in their hearts - where, in spite of every tragedy - the spirit of dance still lives and somehow seemed to keep them going. Maybe, if you have a passion that runs deep to your core - that fire - even if you don't remember what it's called or where it came from - can still feed your life and keep a glimmer of hope alive. This is one of the strangest movies I've ever seen. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you can handle weird and unconventional "Rumba" just might twerk your gazebo. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved it. The filming is great and the idea is unique. Europian movie is a refreshment :) It might be a bit odd, but it's very touching and humoristic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit too body-expression, far-fetched, forceful when starting off, but turns out to be acceptable & ridiculously funny on the way.
