Born in Australia but raised in Canada, writer/actor/director Fiona Gordon creates comedic French-language movies with her better half, Belgian filmmaker Dominique Abel. Gordon and Abel established their playful aesthetic with a series of short films, including 2000's "Rosita," about a nomadic and trouble-prone soothsayer, and "Walking on the Wild Side," which follows a romance between a cleaning lady and her unlikely suitor. In 2005, Gordon and Abel, in collaboration with fellow triple-threat filmmaker Bruno Romy, released their full-length debut, "L'iceberg," starring the actress as a woman torn between her boring day-to-day life and a more carefree existence. The trio of Gordon, Abel, and Romy followed up the film with the dance-oriented "Rumba," about two schoolteachers obsessed with the Latin dance form. Continuing to have a fruitful working relationship, the threesome next offered up 2011's "The Fairy," a magic-tinged story set in the French port city of Le Havre. While Gordon portrayed the title character, Abel co-starred as a hotel clerk determined to win her heart. Although Gordon's productions with Abel and Romy are not widely known outside of Europe, they have garnered a devoted following, particularly among film lovers with an appreciation for the similarly spirited work of the late Jacques Tati.
