Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel (THE FAIRY, LOST IN PARIS) delight audiences with their blend of slapstick and burlesque. Their latest "crime movie" transmutes the codes of film noir through their characteristically colorful palette and clownish plot twists. Abel plays Boris, a former activist hiding from his dark past, keeping in the shadows as a barkeeper, until a one-armed vigilante finally hunts him down. The fortuitous appearance of a double--the depressive recluse Dom (also played by Abel) seems to offer the perfect decoy. But his tenacious and loopy ex-wife, the private eye Fiona (Gordon), could foil their master plan. Abel and Gordon's memorable dose of hilarity seems perfectly calibrated to the social mood; each deceptively minimalistic set piece brims with a cinematic intelligence that recalls Tati and Keaton. The cast features Philippe Martz and Bruno Romy and the Japanese dancer Kaori Ito, who plays a willful and hilariously unpredictable femme fatale.

Alissa Wilkinson New York Times “The Falling Star” offers little in the way of dramatic tension or intrigue, and its comedy, mildly clever at first, starts to feel repetitive. Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety Desperately needs that magnetic tug audiences typically feel when a sad lonely man and a sad lonely woman orbit one another for 90-odd minutes. Here, we get 98 very odd minutes with hardly a hint of romance. It’s that spark The Falling Star lacks. Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue While its intricately choreographed silliness is occasionally inspired, even audacious, it becomes tiresome. Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Mark Dujsik Mark Reviews Movies One could probably count on a single hand how many of ... [the jokes] actually work and still have uncounted fingers remaining. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Dan Mecca The Film Stage Once the plot is activated, the coincidences become less cute, the messaging less effective. It’s, frankly, the problem with much film noir: the style is the thing while the rest too often breaks the spell. Rated: C+ Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Rosalie Kicks MovieJawn For those of us that seek something off the beaten path, this is the type of picture we fall for.
