      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Replete with quirky indie cliches, Happy Tears wastes some fine performances from Demi Moore, Parker Posey, and Rip Torn on stale formula.

Audience Member This movie did little for me. The trippy bits were a complete turn-off and a disconnect. I didn't understand the characters, I didn't empathize with them. I was just glad when the movie was over. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It wants to be a good movie, but it is far too "quirky" for its own good. It often feels forced. It must be noted that Demi Moore gives a solid performance. And, Parker Posey carries her charismatic weight. But the film just sort of flounders. Lichtenstein's film manages to be both all-too-familiar and a bit too strange at the same time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review nilufer e I enjoyed this movie very much, I don't know why the critics are so low. Parker Posey is magical and I loved the references and the acting. It wasn't very eventful or emotional but it was very entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite the story which i became very interested in when i saw who the two main characters are being played by you just can't get any better than that with Demi Moore and Parker Posey i enjoyed the funnier moments in the film and Overall i quite enjoyed the film kudos to the cast and director Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member The film was so so. I felt like I have seen this type of movie before. It reminded me of movies like Marvin's Room and In Her Shoes, except those films were better than this one. The tone and the pacing was off. Parker Posey is great in the film. She and Demi Moore are great as sisters in the film. Rip Torn seemed miscast as their father. The film is worth seeing for Posey and Moore's performances. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A quirky comedy - aren't all movies starring Parker Posey quirky? - that is worth seeing if only for Rip Torn's performance. Joe Neumaier New York Daily News A cringe-inducing, self-consciously kooky indie comedy that's best enjoyed for its taste of Rip Torn, who, judging by his recent alleged bank break-in, comes to loose-cannon stuff naturally. Rated: 1/4 Feb 19, 2010 Full Review Manohla Dargis New York Times Writer and director Mitchell Lichtenstein struggles to find the humor in a host of horrors. Rated: 2/5 Feb 19, 2010 Full Review Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly Hollywood's strong female actors have in Lichtenstein a young talent who gives them the roles they deserve. Rated: B Feb 18, 2010 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Happy Tears never bores... it's perversely entertaining.
