What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kevin Spacey's performance is almost sharp enough to save this Hollywood dramedy from itself, but in the end, he's dragged down by a cliched script and indifferent direction.

Hank Sartin Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 16, 2011 Full Review London Evening Standard The film, expertly played by actors who look as if they know exactly what they are talking about, is a bit like a voyeur's view of the Hollywood we only hear about in scandal sheets. Rated: C- Apr 16, 2017 Full Review Allan Hunter Daily Express (UK) Shrink neatly intertwines the lives of the leading characters in a manner reminiscent of Robert Altman's Short Cuts but without that film's haunting poignancy. Rated: 3/5 Jun 7, 2010 Full Review Damon Wise Radio Times Though it dwells on the seamier side of showbiz -- a seedy, pill-popping actor and a slutty casting-couch actress turn up in subplots -- it ultimately buys into the fantasy land it had started out debunking. peter S Excellent storyline completely wasted on a mediocre script. The actors are badly directed. Saffron is like a speechless ghost. Kevin Spacey talks in circles. It gets quickly tiring. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Again the "professionals" miss a good one while they're busy giving anything from Disney/Pixar a 90%< average. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Ummm... misleading description for me. Didn't really feel like it was about the ‘shrink' and the troubled teen but more of an ensemble cast involving the psychiatrist, his many patients, and all their relationships with each other and with others. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I think that this movie tries to show us the importance of the search of genuine meaning. Instead of simply search for things. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review nilufer e I really enjoyed this drama and I think it's under-rated. Amazing cast and good stories. Could have been so much better though if the connections were stronger and if tit was more sentimental. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the worst Paul Thomas Anderson movie I've ever seen. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
