The true story of fast-draws and wild rides, battles with posses, train and bank robberies, a torrid love affair and a new lease on outlaw life in far away Bolivia. It is also a character study of a remarkable friendship between Butch - possibly the most likeable outlaw in frontier history - and his closest associate, the fabled, ever-dangerous Sundance Kid.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

With its iconic pairing of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, jaunty screenplay and Burt Bacharach score, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has gone down as among the defining moments in late-'60s American cinema.

Pauline Kael New Yorker After a few minutes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, I began to get that depressed feeling, and, after a half hour, felt rather offended. Feb 5, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) It's lighthearted and likeable, a cool, 1960s spin on a genre that at the time had become a little tired. Apr 10, 2023 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com It's a hilarious film with some surprising dark moments...it's a damn good one. Rated: A- Sep 7, 2018 Full Review Bianca Garner InSession Film Butch Cassidy is a visually beautiful film to gaze upon. Jul 31, 2024 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times Credit must go to the Oscar-winning trio of William Goldman, Conrad Hall and Burt Bacharach for the witty script, luminous photography and jaunty score respectively, but all of the charm of this ever-popular picture lies with the charismatic outlaws. Rated: 5/5 Mar 7, 2024 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times It was produced and released during the American New Wave and the aesthetic and narrative choices Hill and Goldman made were spot on. They took a “sacred cow” genre and infused it with a new perspective; a jolt that resulted in an instant classic. Rated: 4.5/5 Jan 15, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Jamie X A beautiful film in every way. The cinematography, characters, story and soundtrack, are all on another level. I simply can't recommend enough. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/24 Full Review Average P Absolute classic, though you feel it really has no right to be, with that strange, anachronistic Burt Bacharach song in the middle, followed by sepia postcards from the boat trip to south America. Proof in a way that you can hang almost anything on a brilliant script and characters ... and the movie will still work. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review Alec C This iconic duo manage to make the art of the Western so memorable! Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are a pair of outlaws known for hitting off some train robberies, only to end up on the run and hiding out in Bolivia, attempting to make a new life for themselves. This cowboy buddy-comedy manages to make the life of the outlaw an enjoyable watch that we love to see over and over again! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Maria O love it. A great classic western Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/24 Full Review Pablo A One of the most fun westerns I've seen and a bromance that makes the movie even more enjoyable. It is a non-stop rollercoaster of emotions and adventures in the life of two bandits thanks to a phenomenal performance by the two leads. A beautifully scripted and shot movie. I can recommend this to people who are just looking for a couple of hours of enjoyable characters, beautiful shots and a compelling story. I will give a 9/10 for a Western, some aspects of the movie didn't work for me but subtract nothing from the overall greatness put on screen.
