      Critics Consensus

With its iconic pairing of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, jaunty screenplay and Burt Bacharach score, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has gone down as among the defining moments in late-'60s American cinema. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

The true story of fast-draws and wild rides, battles with posses, train and bank robberies, a torrid love affair and a new lease on outlaw life in far away Bolivia. It is also a character study of a remarkable friendship between Butch - possibly the most likeable outlaw in frontier history - and his closest associate, the fabled, ever-dangerous Sundance Kid.

Fantastic dialogue, but, wow, this movie is a direct rip-off of Arthur Penn's BONNIE AND CLYDE.

A disappointing hippie Western that is too light for its own good and errs in tone by diluting the urgency of the story with a tongue-in-cheek humor and endless landscape shots that make it painfully slow - not to mention how hard it is to care about its one-dimensional characters.

A beautifully shot film that combines excellent acting with overt irony to paint a sardonic picture of the western genre.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is a film of great writing, direction, and cinematography, but the performances of Paul Newman and Robert Redford are what really elevate the production. Their chemistry and comic interplay are what really got me involved, and it's surprising how much depth they actually bring to their characters. But while the film as a whole is wonderfully entertaining, it does have its problems. As much as I like the score, it doesn't work. In fact, it practically ruins several great scenes, with the "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" sequence and the photo montage near the middle being two prime examples. But as hindering to the production as both are, I'm still a big fan.
