The intentional comedy in the film always seems on the verge of working, but then is quickly bludgeoned to death. Go to Full Review

The film's portrait of young love may be touching, but its most moving moments celebrate love of a different kind: the passion that movie professionals, both young and old, have for their craft. Go to Full Review

Thanks to the heavy synthetic hand of director George Roy Hill, the potentially charming aspects of th kids' infatuation curdle into syrupy gruel. Go to Full Review

Christopher F. @Christopher1958 Oct 27 A cute little romance from the 70’s. Charming if not a little staged and static. See more Allan C 11/18/2024 Diane Lane plays an American teenager staying in Paris with her actress mom, Sally Kellerman, when she strikes up a relationship with a young Parisian boy. I'd always been curious to see this film since it was Lane's first movie (and since she was my celebrity crush since SIX PACK), but this movie was soooooooo annoyingly precious I could barely take it. I knew it had a reputation as not being very good, so I went in with low expectations, but even then, it was a slog, which is disappointing since it was directed by the great and under-appreciated George Roy Hill (THE STRING, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER, SLAP SHOT, etc.). Even Laurence Olivier is hard to take in a completely hammy performance, playing an elderly Frenchman who befriends the young couple. However, as bad as the movie is, it was kind of fun to watch Lane display star power and on-screen charisma even at 13 years old. It's crazy to think that 5 years later, she'd be playing her first adult role in STREETS OF FIRE because she's a total kid in this movie. Reportedly, Olivier was so charmed by Lane that he became something of a mentor to her during filming, where he described her as "the next Grace Kelly." which isn't far off. The film also has a nice score by composer Georges Delerue (CONTEMPT, PLATOON, BEACHES), and this film is the only one he ever won an Academy Award. I'd say to skip this one unless you are a die-hard Lane or Olivier fan. FUN FACT! According to co-star David Dukes, Broderick Crawford had been part of the U. S. Army when they liberated Paris in 1944, and he loved being back all these years later because "He could still walk into restaurants where the owner would remember him and sit him down to dinner." Although the guy was boring, his new girlfriend wasn't. I really like seeing a girl who is open. This is how the director described that there are such couples. See more Read all reviews
