SICKS6SIX With an average of 54 I'm a bit surprised. In a world of CGI. Car crashes. Helicopter gun ships and over acting from duff actors the big leggy Western is a a welcome break. Sit back enjoy the vistas and remember how long back this was made. Half a century back and it looks like it was just released. I keep thinking westerns are not for me but after watching the dross served up on Netflix (sub suspended) this is a welcome break. 3-1/2 stars. So not awesome but not bad either. Middle of the road. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/24/22 Full Review Liam D John Wayne is still entertaining but you can tell his tricks are starting to be stale Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/25/21 Full Review Audience Member Does what it says on the tin. Didn't need much else with John Wayne, great set design & wonderful panoramic cinematography that's perhaps too grandiose for this story, if I am to nit-pick. Simply a solid Western, with some genuinely funny & heart-warming moments throughout. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member good late career western from Wayne Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good depiction of an actual historical event. Great lines and acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Standard JW fayre. Slow to start but with some good action moments and very good horse stunts. Average but not bad. Derek Malcolm Guardian I suppose I should welcome it with open arms. But I can't. We are in the country Ford trod better, nice as the scenery is. Mar 11, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Unfortunately, McLaglen is never able to draw his threads together. As in his The Way West, he takes a panoramic theme and then gets so close to it that we lose sight of the whole. Rated: 2/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Michael Billington Birmingham Post Morally the film is impeccable: it is a salutary hymn to the virtues of forgiving and forgetting, helping one's neighbor and burying hatchets somewhere other than in people's heads. Mar 11, 2022 Full Review Richard Schickel LIFE The old frontier is alive and well in the Duke's mind and in that of his director, Andrew V. McLaglen. Nov 1, 2021 Full Review Trevor Grove The Spectator A large measure of their success is due to an accomplished screenplay by Waldo Salt-pungent, racy, and with a nice line in over the shoulder throwaways. Feb 21, 2019 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis While the action is decent, the plot is just a little too strained, the dialogue too wooden, and Hudson overmatched in this John Wayne vehicle.
