Critics Consensus

Hardly in the same league as John Hughes' other teen movies, the resolutely goofy Weird Science nonetheless gets some laughs via its ridiculous premise and enjoyable performances.

It’s a silly sci-fi sex comedy, but there are amusing moments to warrant revisiting. Go to Full Review

The premise here threatens puerile perversion, female exploitation, and an uncomfortable age gap... – but in fact Hughes gives Lisa the confidence, agency and power that the boys lack, and makes her more fairy godmother than sex object. Go to Full Review

Weird Science describes itself as *a special effects comedy*... it comes across more as a feeble blend of tediously vulgar, stale half-baked ideas. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Aug 15 Weird Science, the 1985 comedy directed by John Hughes, follows two socially awkward teenage boys who attempt to create the "perfect" woman through a bizarre science experiment. By today’s standards, the premise is extremely problematic, as the film portrays an adult woman interacting with underage boys in ways that are undeniably uncomfortable. Watching it in 2025, it’s clear that the storyline hasn’t aged gracefully. That said, for its time, Weird Science worked perfectly within the context of 1980s comedy. It’s funny, campy, and unapologetically over-the-top – exactly the kind of humor that made many 80s films cult classics. Its audacity to push boundaries is part of what has allowed it to endure while many modern films fade into obscurity for playing it too safe. Kelly LeBrock’s performance as Lisa is iconic. She brings comedy, charm, and undeniable sex appeal to the role, keeping the film entertaining despite its uncomfortable premise. LeBrock’s presence elevates the material, making Lisa memorable beyond the problematic elements of the story. Robert Downey Jr. also makes an early, memorable appearance as a teenager, playing a self-centered and arrogant character with confidence. However, the true highlights are Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith, who portray Gary and Wyatt. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the joy they clearly had on set translates into genuinely engaging performances. Their comedic timing carries many of the film’s scenes, from ridiculous party antics to chaotic family moments. The story itself is pure 80s cheese: a random missile incident, over-the-top parties, quirky grandparents, and an obnoxious older brother. Every absurd element contributes to the film’s unique charm. While some jokes and scenarios are questionable today, the energy and creativity behind the film make it a quintessential example of 80s teen comedy. Overall, Weird Science is best suited for an older audience that can appreciate its campy humor and darkly comedic moments without being overly sensitive to outdated themes. For those willing to embrace its cheesy, over-the-top nature, it remains a fun, memorable, and undeniably classic slice of 1980s cinema. Then switched the girls they liked and cheated on the original girl they created? Used her to get their lives together and got rid of her..? They never deserved her 🤦🏻‍♀️. Pretty silly story but this is definitely a common theme for this time period. Love me some silly concepts when done right. Really enjoyed the dynamic between Gary and Wyatt as well. Overall, pretty fun! See more Jace E @thefilmguy Jun 9 Movie #2 of my John Hughes Directorial Marathon Even a young RDJ couldn't save this movie. As I embarked on this John Hughes marathon, I was excited about a lot of the movies on the list. There were a few, however, that I had never heard of. Weird Science was one of those movies and I understand why I had never heard of it. The entire premise of the film is problematic and the protagonists don't really learn anything. I'm glad that I watched the movie to complete the marathon, but I don't see myself ever re-visiting this one. Best Character: Chet Best Quote: "So, what would you little maniacs like to do first?" - Lisa Note: I saw something that said that John Hughes wrote this film in two days. I believe that.
