What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may be too sweet for some, but this unabashedly sentimental holiday favorite is too cheerful to resist.

Jack Moffitt Hollywood Reporter It will be a poor showman who can't get an audience into the theatre when he can base his sales talks upon such expertly assembled and tangible box office ingredients. Dec 20, 2021 Full Review TIME Staff TIME Magazine A big fat yam of a picture richly candied with VistaVision (Paramount's answer to CinemaScope), Technicolor, tunes by Irving Berlin, massive production numbers, and big stars. Unfortunately, the yam is still a yam. Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Martin Chilton Daily Telegraph (UK) A good musical with a lot of star power. Rated: 4/5 Dec 22, 2014 Full Review Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby at their best are funny enough together to deserve a sequel, although not all the production numbers in this big Irving Berlin musical are successful. Nov 5, 2019 Full Review PJ Nabarro Patrick Nabarro There are one or two diverting aspects to keep the film from being a mere parlour game in waiting for Crosby's seasonal number. Rated: 3/5 Jan 8, 2019 Full Review Virginia Graham The Spectator However, between the painful alpha and omega of this film there is a lot of extremely pleasant entertainment. SkyRo P It's a classic film, film, with classic moments and memories It's pretty old-fashioned even for me, I mean it aged well, but it didn't age the way I expected it to There were some cheesy moments and some moments that we were just like what are we watching, but overall it's a classic and it does its purpose for Christmas Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Mitch C Although this movie does get generally "Fresh" reviews, there are some notable naysayers, and honestly I don't get that. Is it sentimental? Uh, yea....it's a Christmas movie, hello... Are there some thin or unlikely plot lines? Certainly! It's not a serious drama. It's called "suspension of disbelief". Now that we have that nonsense out of the way. This cast is nothing short of superb. From the Irving Berlin catchy, "hooky" (meaning you'll be humming these tunes long after watching,) songs, to the clever, and often funny dialog, with impeccable timing from Crosby and Kaye at the top of their game, this classic is a must see, many, many times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Robin L Great color and cinematography and some fantastic moments of dance and acting with Vera-Ellen, the real star. A couple of good songs. Too long. Story a mess. Lots of dithering. Little Der Bingle-Rosemary Clooney chemistry. Danny Kaye okay as side kick. Understandable hypermilitarism in McCarthy era, but songs about war vets wanting to return to the army and also worrying about unemployed postwar generals must have angered veterans, especially those who were injured or lost dear friends. Festive intent but disheartening in retrospect. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Karen B Delightful! A Christmas tradition to watch this beautiful film. Flashback to a time filled with glamour, romance, dancing and music. Everyone should watch this film at least once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Vince D Bing and Danny at their best. A heartwarming story with great singing and dancing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Devin B A heartwarming Christmas classic musical for the whole family to enjoy!
