Critics Consensus

Blue Steel's increasingly over-the-top story beggars disbelief, but this cop drama is elevated by an appealing cast and Kathryn Bigelow's stylish direction.

Roxana Hadadi Crooked Marquee What Blue Steel captured was a certain moment in the 1990s when the psychosexual thriller reigned supreme, with a blending of sensuality and menace. Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Blue Steel turns into yet another movie about Jamie Lee Curtis bravely fighting off a bogeyman. It's Halloween 1990. Still, Bigelow's talent cuts through in flashes. Rated: B- Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Nigel Floyd Time Out Short on plausibility but preserving the psycho-sexual ambiguities throughout, Bigelow's seductively stylish, wildy fetishistic thriller is proof that a woman can enter a traditionally male world and, like Megan, beat men at their own game. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Kathryn Bigelow has realized a film where not one frame lacks interest. Kizza X Daft and repetitive. Nobody saw the robber had a gun? Then the zillion times they let the bad guy get away, over and over, becomes tedious. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Jason J This move had so many implausible moments that I couldn’t take it seriously & I wished I never started the film. A case of style over substance. Avoid if possible. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Jamie S Not the best Jamie Lee Curtis film. But it was a entertaining action film. It would have probably been better if there was a little more back story on the Eugene Hunt character and why he became psychotic and obsessed with Curtis' character. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Jeff M This is movie that has one huge pro surrounded by several cons of varying degrees. The pro is undoubtedly Curtis, a most charismatic and engaging actress who lights up virtually every movie she's in - well, not CHRISTMAS WITH THE CRANKS. But I digress. She is the heart and soul of this film and pretty much the only reason to watch it. That being said, the filmmakers make it tough for us to take her seriously as a cop - for some reason they put her in an oversized hat and a uniform a couple sizes too big. It gives the impression of a young girl playing dress up. But Curtis overcomes this obstacle and gives a compelling performance. The same can't be said for her co-star. A movie like this is only as good as its villain, and Silver is a dud. He's a fine actor who has given many wonderful performances, but Eugene Hunt is not a character who inspires fear or trepidation - more like annoyance. Even worse are Phillip Bosco and Louise Fletcher as Curtis' parents. Their scenes are bordering on unbearable. There's not many surprises here - I pretty much knew who would die within the first 20 minutes. And the screenplay has Curtis' character do such head-shakingly stupid things that we occasionally question her sanity. It's a drab and dreary looking movie, and one frankly wouldn't guess by watching this that Bigelow would go on to become the first female Best Director Oscar winner. Thankfully, Curtis helps us forgive a multitude of sins. She almost single handedly makes a very disappointing movie recommendable. Almost. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Alec B I'm almost willing to give it pass because of the impeccable direction, cinematography, and Curtis' performance. Unfortunately the screenplay is so outrageously bad that whatever potential the movie had is rendered pointless. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Jelisije J A movie that didn't now whether to be an over the top cop drama or a realistic movie about a women police officer.
