Audience Member Terrible, bad acting , poor make up, Hunchy's wig looked like something from a joke shop. Considering the quality of actors, I'm surprised they agreed to be in it, I've seen more convincing CarryOn movies...Rubbish Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This cast (and film overall) is really strange. Anthony Hopkins as Quasimodo is really the saving grace of this film. His costume is pretty cool, even with Quasimodo donning a mullet he was actually believable as the hunchback. Some say Jacobi is the greatest Frollo, but I don't see it. He has talent, but there's no connection in it to be believable. I would recommend Kenneth Haigh from the 1977 version over him. Lesley-Anne Down is fine, but is NOT a believable Esmeralda either; she is more just some woman caught up in things than a 16-year-old gypsy. The rest of the cast is just okay, but not truly fitting. I had saved this version for last to see over the others, and was very disappointed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie stayed relatively true to the book's story and characters. It is a film of it's times and does lack the cinema feel as it went straight to T.V and then DVD. The greatest flaw of the movie is Down's portrayal of Esmeralda who only appeared to show a sign of human emotion when she was speaking. The saving grace of the film was Jacobi's masterful portrayal of Frollo; he brought out the human side to this tortured soul which is rarely done in the movie iterations. He makes you pity him while still never fully empathise with him which I LOVE in a villain. Hopkins' performance is good but the movie doesn't give us enough time to see him develop his character (which is important when he is the subject of the title!) Overall 25% of the movie is a must-see (all of the scenes Jacobi is in) while 75% of the movie is dull. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is filled with fantastic performances, but dragged down by it's script. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review simon d I've not seen any of the other versions of this film but i remember this being quite a moving film from when I was seven years old. It's fairly slow in the middle but the long-lasting image of the unfortunate ginger monster is forever ingrained in my brain. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member still not as faithful to the book as one would like, but some great performances by Hopkins and Jakobi. James Plath Movie Metropolis It's not the definitive version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but then again, I'm not sure there is such a thing. Rated: 7/10 Jun 7, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews
