Todd McCarthy Variety Well-mounted and very traditional, Of Mice and Men honorably serves John Steinbeck's classic story of two Depression-era drifters without bringing anything new to it. Jun 3, 2008 Full Review Time Out Staff Time Out It's hard ... to believe Malkovich's shamble and gape, a simian variant on Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times Of Mice and Men is a mournful, distantly heard lament for the loss of American innocence. May 9, 2023 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Still, in a time when most moviegoers (and video viewers) seem to prefer color, Of Mice and Men retells Steinbeck's tale with sensitivity and respect. May 3, 2018 Full Review Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews Classic-literature-adaptation demureness...but it's impeccably cast and mostly quite faithful. annette Z Im not a big stienbeck fan Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Navyhunter 5 Though I'm not a prolific movie critic, I have something even more important. For nearly an academic term I studied the written version of this story, written by John Steinbeck. It gave me an insight on how The Great Depression of America affected the average proletariat, and also the average mentally challenged proletariat. This shows how Steinbeck was ahead of his time, by including a man with autistic tendencies into his story, furthermore making him a main character. But, what about the movie itself? For me the casting, voices, acting, and the overall appearance of the actors/characters make this film the "default version" of the story if you're looking for the best adaptation from book to live-action. What I also really like about this movie is the actor of Lennie, John Malkovich (also the writer of the 100 years movie). He perfectly reenacts how Lennie would be if he were real and even makes his lines funnier to watch. When compared to other adaptations of the story into film, I find his voice to be the perfect tone for his character, not too deep/masculine, and enough to sound childlike. In conclusion, I think that this movie is the right one to watch if you want see the story in live-action, and as a way to give a teacher a break while teaching/studying the book itself. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Rami A A wonderfully made drama. Exactly how I imagined it when reading the book. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review We Talk N What an impactful movie. Well done adaptation from the book. The acting and story was really really good and it had so many emotions. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review gallyo t Everything about the film really tries to stay true to the source material. Though it did miss out on quite a bit. Which I would've loved to seen. The film still encapsulates the emotions of all the characters incredibly. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/23 Full Review Ava V Awesome movie! Definitely watch!
