Richard Brody New Yorker Walsh, a cinematic poet of brassy urbanity, stokes the story’s volatile elements... to a crescendo of abraded grandeur. Jun 20, 2022 Full Review Ian Thomas Malone ianthomasmalone.com Walsh’s feature is a train wreck of unnecessary subplots entirely redeemed by Lupino’s mesmerizing performance and the highly effective jazz score. Jul 28, 2022 Full Review Michael E. Grost Classic Film and Television Fascinating mix of romantic soap opera, jazz musical and film noir motifs. Jan 31, 2010 Full Review Sean Axmaker Seanax.com ... a refreshingly mature film rich with stories of frustrated lives, unrequited loves and tough times just getting by in the world without selling your soul. Aug 13, 2009 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews Except for Ida Lupino's feisty performance as a tortured woman in love who tries to help her family, the acting was weak. Audience Member Don't know what director Raoul Walsh did to illicit so many engrossing performances but it sure is cool to watch. The story is uneven but worthy of your attention if you like a woman's melodrama with some noir elements. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
