Critics Consensus

Distractingly violent and historically dodgy, Mel Gibson's Braveheart justifies its epic length by delivering enough sweeping action, drama, and romance to match its ambition.

Jeff Millar Houston Chronicle Feb 27
The film talks the stirring talk, but it can't quite walk the walk. Gibson's direction is passable, but critically absent is the panache which sweeps us up and off wherever he wants to take us. Go to Full Review
Michael Medved New York Post Feb 27
The picture is easily an hour too long, and that's a shame since Braveheart at its best -- especially in its breathtaking battle sequences -- is very good indeed. Go to Full Review
Rick Groen Globe and Mail Feb 27
Despite a formidable effort and occasional grace, there's something cowardly about Braveheart -- it's an aspiring giant with a diminutive soul. Go to Full Review

Altogether, as epics go, Braveheart is worthy of a skirl of the pipes and a toast in Glenmorangie. Go to Full Review

The major failing of Braveheart is that it never for a moment convinces us that we've invaded a remote and alien culture. Its success is that it recaptures the high ground of movie heroism. Go to Full Review
Philip Molloy Irish Independent Feb 27
The battle scenes, which are among the best ever seen on film, are absolutely crucial to the success of the movie. Braveheart truly deserves the description 'epic.' Go to Full Review

Felix S. @FelixjSolis 3d Forget about the facts and this is a great Fantasy Movie. See more Par H @Parhwy 3d Braveheart (1995) is a 178-minute-long film I watched on free-to-air telly in March 2025 (I own Braveheart in my Sony account however sometimes movies with ads is nostalgic. There is much to say about this film. As I always review with less than 1000 characters, let’s cut to the chase. I loathe Longshanks the historical person however his actor (Patrick McGoohan) and scripting are perfect, especially that "Is it?!" scene. Young Wallace’s acting and the directing are awful, except for the funeral scene. Wallace leaves his homeland as an 11-year-old boy and returns 10 years later as a 38-year-old man. Love the Irishman, Stephen, albeit I always side eye the cliches and stereotypes. Love the velvet dresses the Princess and her consort wear. The scenery and music are mostly ok; much use of Irish elbow pipes drains the impact, as do misty hills and muddy streets. Rewatch? After 10+ watches to date, I suspect so. Recommend? Yes (leave historical accuracy at the door). 7/10. See more Pedro Henrique C @Pedro2005 6d Braveheart (1995) The film is good entertainment, it has several positive points: the scenery, the script, the costumes and the acting. The cast manages to deliver a high quality of performance. William Wallace’s journey is inspiring, heartbreaking, and unforgettable — a true symbol of courage, freedom, and sacrifice 💙⚔️ The cinematography is stunning, the score gives you chills 🎶, and the performances are deeply moving. Every battle feels intense and meaningful, while the quieter moments hit just as hard. This film doesn’t just entertain — it stays with you long after the credits roll.
