      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Formulaic and trite, In Love and War unconvincingly recreates Ernest Hemingway's early life with all the stuffy tropes that the author would have excised in a second draft.

Lanfranco C The quite real story of the war's adventure of Hemingway that inspired His roman "A Farewell to Arms" Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Tim M Butchering the young life of Ernest Hemingway with dull writing and wooden acting, In Love and War marks a low point for director Richard Attenborough. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Paul C This happens to be my favourite film of all time. I know it's not trendy to like romance or heartbreak but here we are. Sandra Bullock's most beautifully restrained performance - and who wouldn't cry at the love scene or the last sequence at the lake? Ignore the critics, this is a classic for all romantics. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Bullock is consistently great. O'Donnell is consistently bland. If this had a better script, like O'Donnell's Scent of a Woman, then it could have raised the limited abilities of Chris O'Donnell, but instead we got this. Unless you're a big huge fan of 1990s period melodrama, then skip this one. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member My favourite film of all time - criminally under-rated Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review steve d I don't know if it is the story or the script, but the film is ridiculously predictable and melodramatic.
