Allan C Blandly entertaining Murphy action flick, stolen by Michael Wincott Metro (1997) *** Eddie Murphy plays a police negotiator hunting down a thief who killed his partner. And get this, Murphy is saddled with an annoying young new partner, who he learns to appreciate by the end of the film. The film is not as jokey as BEVERLY HILLS COP or 48HRS and aspires to be more of a straight action film, although Murphy has some quips here and there. I'm guessing this was the type of action-oriented film Murphy was hoping to do with the ill-fated BEVERLY HILLS COP 3 (where the director wanted more comedy). While METRO hits all the action film cliches and brings nothing new to the genre, it's a comfort food type of film that's blandly satisfying in its own unchallenging fashion.  The filmmakers make good use of the San Francisco setting, an action film cliche unto itself, and the film features a solid cast that besides Murphy includes Michael Rapport (TRUE ROMANCE, ATYPICAL), Art Evans (DIE HARD 2, TRESPASS), Donal Logue (BLADE, GOTHAM), Paul Ben-Victor (THE WIRE), and best of all is gravelly voice Michael Wincott (THE CROW, STRANGE DAYS) as the villain. Watching this made me want to go down a rabbit hole of Michael Wincott flicks. If I do, I think I'd want to start with the corny Alex Cross movie, ALONG CAME A SPIDER, where he was a fantastic villain. Overall, I'll probably completely forget everything about this movie in a day or two, but I was entertained while watching it. FUN FACT! This was the first major theatrical score by Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro.  AI CAPSUL REVIEW: Metro is a formulaic but watchable Eddie Murphy action vehicle about a police negotiator chasing his partner’s killer. The San Francisco setting and solid cast add some flavor, but it’s gravel-voiced villain Michael Wincott who truly steals the show. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Jelisije J A nice 90's action movie that tone felt a bit off when Eddie Murphy cant decide whether or not to a serious or funny character in his own movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/25 Full Review Deep R Better watch one time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Kevin C This movie is criminally underrated. I love action and crime movies and I come back to it every 5 years or so. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Mat B The critics - and apparently audiences - are clueless. Yes, this has been done before. But not by Eddie Murphy. This movie is tense, hilarious in parts, well-acted, looks great in actual real film unlike 99% of the "films" these days, and all of the actors are in their prime, unlike many of the movies these days where all the movie stars are ancient and grey. I will love this movie til the day I die. I hope it gets a 4K (or better) release. IMO it's one of the best Eddie Murphy movies! Great direction, great writing. Michael Rapaport and Michael Wincott, oh my gosh Michael Wincott.. the best villain ever. Go watch the original version of The Crow. And watch this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/12/24 Full Review Michael S A loud, busy, but very dumb movie that seems confused as to what it is. You have a hostage negotiator (who doesn't negotiate) training a new partner (they're barely together) and trying to catch a jewel thief (who is also a cop killer, but that doesn't seem to be that big a deal).
