A collection of disparate but equally damaged characters is traveling to Omaha, Neb. to perform in a karaoke competition with a grand prize of $5,000. They include con artist Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), who finds his long-lost daughter, Liv (Gwyneth Paltrow), and brings her along for the ride, as well as a beleaguered salesman, Todd (Paul Giamatti). These and other people with more than their share of eccentricities invest their hopes and dreams in the competition.

Critics Consensus

Duets suffers from sloppy direction and stretches credibility. Also, the characters are uninteresting and it's hard to care about what happens to them.

In addition to its other shortcomings, Duets is awfully slow in getting going. Go to Full Review
Terry Lawson Detroit Free Press 01/01/2000
Aside from Duets seeming ridiculously dated, it is seriously tone-deaf. It veers wildly from light pop to social protest to the kind of violent drama that could be played out to a rap track. Go to Full Review
Robert Philpot Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com 01/01/2000
Looks a little like an early '70s TV-movie -- a lost, well-meaning artifact about 'looking for America' that you stumbled across during a late-night channel-surf. Go to Full Review

As with nights in karaoke bars, where the expectation of the singing standards is low, Duets surprises like the occasional singers who can actually hit a note. Go to Full Review
Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant 06/08/2018
Besides its dim and sometimes slipshod look, this little ensemble work slides from pretentious flights of philosophizing to touches of smart smut as it surveys the American dream as pursued by various warbling wanderers. Go to Full Review
Joe Leydon The Moving Picture Show 07/19/2014
A muddled and meandering long-distance road movie that strives to be engagingly offbeat, but more often comes across as annoyingly off-key. Go to Full Review

Allen R @AL_SeesALotOfMovies Aug 31 The characters were not written very likable and so it makes it hard to root for anyone in the movie. See more Tim M @tgmacman Jun 6 Forget vocal chemistry: the cast of Duets hardly plays off one another whatsoever, content to let this inert dramedy get booed offstage. See more Ian H Apr 20 Weirdly compelling even if characters are a very random bunch See more Anduin H Jan 16 Sure it’s flawed, but this movie always gets me! The karaoke is wonderful - Andre Braugher and Paul Giamatti !!! It’s a fairytale, an odyssey, kind of ridiculous but if you allow yourself to indulge in a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief, you will enjoy yourself thoroughly. Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis!!! See more Zachary V 12/14/2023 I really loved this movie and it was very heart felt with decent singing would definitely recommend See more 02/04/2023 Great feel good movie! Good music!
