Michael Dequina TheMovieReport.com Takes a refreshingly liberated and modern stance on relationships by ultraconservative Hindi film standards--and having such savvy to go along with the usual sweetness adds to frothy charms. It is the contains the perfect balance between sweet melodrama, and exciting plot lines that keep the viewer sucked in and waiting for more. It follows the lives of Karan (Saif Ali Khan) and Rhea (Rani Mukerji), who meet on their long voyage to study at universities in New York City. Rhea and Karan are constantly chasing each other's company, both unintentionally and, at times, intentionally. They challenge the conventions of love and marriage that have been established in many preceding Bollywood films, through several of their interactions throughout the film. As Rosie Thomas explains in "Melodrama and the Negotiation of Morality in Mainstream Hindi Film, "... films - including texts such as film-star gossip - are an important locus for the ongoing negotiation and transformation of a sense of 'modern' Indian traditionalism." The challenges against traditional marriage and love found in Hum Tum not only allow for the viewer to have a sense of escape from what is usually seen while watching the film, but also transforms the expectations associated with love and marriage in Bollywood. Much like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, this Yash Raj film perfectly blended real-world experiences with Bollywood drama to make a love story that is hard to forget. If you enjoyed the suspense of lovers finding each other, as well as a bit of family drama found in DDLJ, you will not be able to leave your seat while Hum Tum. Karan and Rhea are a bit more mature than Raj and Simran, but are still equally as playful and fun, and have just as many, if not more, laughable moments than DDLJ's main characters. I strongly recommend this film, as it was not only easy to watch and follow along, but it also includes realistic elements of hardship and love. It is such a feel-good movie and proposes the idea that not all Bollywood love stories have to follow the same formula. If you like leaving a movie with the feeling that everything is right in the world, then this movie is for you! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member The film Hum Tum is a classic Bollywood romantic comedy that is entertaining and perfectly executed. If you've seen and liked Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, then this movie is a perfect match for you: the music and plot are very similar and it's not as long! Although I believe DDLJ has more singing and dancing, Hum Tum does have its fair amount of love songs. Hum Tum also has a twist where it incorporates some animation within the plot, giving it the right balance of different film techniques. If you are a fan of flashback movies as well as fast forwarding into the future, then this is the film for you. The flashbacks, typical of Bollywood movies, are very effective in explaining the narrative. "Flashbacks are a very common narrative device to establish context, introduce characters, and situate the central conflict within a larger temporal frame, usually across generations," (Ganti, 105). The film moves at a steady pace and is easy to follow along. Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee are the leads in the film and do a superb acting job. Just as in DDLJ when Raj and Simran venture to different locations, the plot of Hum Tum also takes us on a journey to see different parts of the world. The film does a beautiful job at this as we observe the evolution of the relationship between the main characters. With all of the different gaps in years throughout the film, we get to see a new place with each segment. The only downside of the film is that it was a little slow after the halfway point because it was starting to get repetitive, but it did speed up near the end. The end is one of the cutest parts of the entire movie so one has to watch the entire film. I would recommend this film to viewers who want an upbeat romantic comedy!
