William L Fresh off a first-time viewing of The Happiness of the Katakuris, watching Izo certainly gives an idea of Takashi Miike's range as a filmmaker; the former is bizarre with comedic intent, the latter is bizarre for much less clear reasons. It's a very dense work, combining imagery and settings from across multiple periods in Japanese history and seemingly taking aim at different facets of society. Vaguely philosophical and surprisingly slow despite jumping around a range of surrealist setpieces and featuring plenty of gore, it's very difficult to pin down if Miike was opting for any particular thematic statement between the strange commentaries on sexuality and metamorphosis. It's dense and there's no clear moment of revelation or clarity. Some may find meaning in it, but I felt pretty left in the dark. However, you can't say that it's not original. And Bob Sapp does play a fun, jacked Buddhist priest with a sword hidden in his staff. (2/5) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/08/22 Full Review Audience Member MY second favorite film of all time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Far away from flawles, but still great reat movie, anarchist hymn and monument to the rage. It is not offten, that our patetic slave mentality in the social structures was depicted with such precision. It is undestandable that for many, this movie looks like random and meanenless carnage, but this perception is not a flaw of the movie, rather a flaw of the beholder. No gods, no masters... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member So torturous to watch I contemplated committing hari-kari by disemboweling myself with Takashi Miike's razor sharp wit! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A slasher flick about a retard samurai killing all people who walks in his way: mothers, yakuzas, gangs, old japanese soldiers, politicians, soldiers, civillians, bitches, his mother and many more... You'll never learn anything from this movie. I guess only Takashi Miike Slasher fans, sadistic insane peaople and gore-lovers will love this. Since I'm only a fan in his horror films, I'd say NO! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
