dave s Nine Lives consists of nine vignettes, each shot in one long take, that focus on the brief but impactful moments that exist in the lives of the characters. Each segment features a woman trying to navigate her way through a complex moment in a relationship, attempting to articulate feelings in order to resolve or bring insight to a particular issue. While the success of the individual segments will vary depending on the viewer and their own experiences, they are all, for the most part, touching and insightful in their own way. The segment with Kathy Baker fearfully preparing for breast surgery in a hospital bed will resonate with most viewers, as will the story of a pregnant woman (Robin Wright Penn) and her chance encounter with a former boyfriend while shopping. While not for all audiences, most viewers will find at least some of the stories interesting and of value. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Each shot in 1 take, Nine-Lives gives us a window into 9 different women's situations. The lives sometimes intersect - but mostly stand alone, which is downfall of the thing as a whole. The cast is insane, however. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review dave j Written and directed by Rodrigo García with the brief lives of nine different women who may or may not have some kind of connection with each other beginning with Sandra (Elpidia Carrillo) trying to earn speaking time with her daughter while she is incarcerated, ending the movie off with Maggie (Glenn Close) and her grand-daughter visiting a cemetery planning to have a picnic on a particular headstone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve d I didn't think the script was powerful enough (or good enough) for this great a cast. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Incredible "acting". A work of art, poetic. The pacing is slow, but the superb acting made-up for it. Not for everyone, but if you're into the "art of film-making, it's a "don't miss, must see". Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I am rarely bored and this is a boring movie. Amanda Seyfried and Dakota Fanning are good but they cannot overcome this terrible script. There are too many movies like this where the parts add up to almost nothing. Jun 28, 2022 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Each woman has to turn herself inside out in continuous time. It has the demands of theatre and the intimacy of cinema. Jun 6, 2008 Full Review David Germain Associated Press The stories are sketches, often without resolution, and while individual segments succeed admirably, taken together the portraits are a fitful match. Some stories work beautifully, while others are dull and hardly capture our interest Apr 26, 2008 Full Review Paul Doro Milwaukee Journal Sentinel In the end, all of the pieces in Nine Lives fit together perfectly. If one story doesn't quite resonate for you, the next one likely will in this small but beautiful film. Rated: 3/4 Oct 1, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews
