Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness One of the most polished and inventive horror flicks of the still-ongoing year, a synthesis of classical supernatural and sexualized imagery that expands upon, rather than simply regurgitates, its celebrated predecessors. Rated: B+ Oct 19, 2006 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting The Woods greatly warns of social conformity and the harms of not questioning authority, yet it also offers a distinct aesthetic, a cast of intriguing characters, and notable performances. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts It's an interesting film with great actors great scares, but the storyline just doesn't really get there for me. Rated: 5/10 Apr 23, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com It features McKee's predilection for homosocial female bonding, though ultimately suffers from an anticlimactic finale and a rather unremarkable female lead. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 20, 2020 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed A very good horror film with great performances, a tight story, and atmosphere that will keep audiences salivating. Apr 29, 2009 Full Review Brian Holcomb Beyond Hollywood "The Woods" plays like a classic Lewton film of the '40's, where the emphasis was on telling a good yarn without much ado and wrapping it up in a tightly wound 70 minutes. Mark B Very good at mood and tension. It really works for 2/3 of the movie but like a lot of horror movies it did not figure out how to bring it home. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review nick s Pretty good production quality. The young actors were fine. This is targeted at the teen horror audience, with all the usual beats. It didn't always build tension well and ended with a bit of a whimper. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/20/23 Full Review Farah R The Woods is a missed opportunity with an intriguing plot and great cast that are sadly buried under its poor execution. Bruce Campbell makes it alright, though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review Audience Member In a career that's stacked with a bevy of "unlikely success stories" – as far as indie Horror flicks go – I consider this 2006 film, "The Woods," to be Lucky McKee's highest achievement as a filmmaker. The acting is above and beyond incredible across the board: seriously, if you think that you've seen the best from Patricia Clarkson in HBO's, "Sharp Objects," then you're missing out on a far more complex and challenging performance that she absolutely nails in what can only be described as one of the best Weird Fiction/Cosmic Horror films of the 21st century. Oh, and yeah Bruce Campbell makes an appearance towards the 3rd act, but the guy turns in a LEGITIMATELY GREAT dramatic performance. No "intentionally goofy" or "intentionally over the top" zany stuff we're used to seeing from the Evil Dead work. This is an entirely different side to Campbell, and I for one wish we could've seen more of it when he was still on the younger side of 45-ish. Anyway, if you're a fan of Horror movies and/or just want to watch AN ORIGINAL STORY that's crafted by a truly inspired director working at the top of their game – look no further. "The Woods" knows when to give you backstory/information, and more importantly, it knows when to withhold that stuff and let the viewer fill in the blanks. I was so shocked to see how well this one held up over 15 years since I had first seen it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review justin t If you have the patience to watch The Woods then there is a lot to gain. This is not your usual witch affair and contains slow boiling intrigue and great storytelling. The pace is a bit too slow and there is too much emphasis on thriller rather than suspense for my taste. Still a very good psychological film for the patient among us. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member 1960s problem girl packed off to an academy after playing with fire. Spooky head mistress and weird scholarship. Really nice establishment of period -yes, in terms of costume and set, but also in style - so much reminds us of 60s horror imagery and even early Argento - when we're not going all meangirls! A really messed up faculty start to give us that sense of unease and that haunting build of horror. Very well crafted and underrated piece.
