William M This film took me by surprise. What starts out as one story, quickly morphs into another stranger, quite odd little tale about a man's obsession with solving a scientific riddle, and how he very nearly loses his mind doing it. Yet a surprising, sort of happy ending. This one stayed with me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/22 Full Review Audience Member A rather strange little movie about a Minnesotan town, a wanna-be film maker, and the hole in the lake Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The filmmaker heads into the Minnesota wilderness to get to the bottom of a mysterious hole in the middle of an othewise frozen lake. This topic is to be featured as the pilot in filmmaker's TV show on quirky local lore. It sounds like a total snooze, I know, but this is a great doc, with the right combination of borderline insanity, the subject's last chance for professional success, narcissism, Minnesotan deadpan, and luck. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Mockumentary has a hilarious concept, but it doesn't exactly follow through on it. The first half or so is very smart and funny, but it gets a bit tedious and repetitive in the middle and meanders off track by the end. More of a character study of an obsessed filmmaker than a comedy about filmmaking, it may have been better served as a short film - there isn't quite enough material even to fill its 80-minute running time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member I didn't even know this was a documentary until I looked it up on IMDb after it was finished. This film was definitely something different, and almost reminiscient of the guerrillacore concept. I thought the film was interesting enough, and I'd probably watch the TV series he was trying to develop, but his obsession with the topic of the pilot episode is just insatiable (and never in a good way). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A cerebral Blair Witch Project sure to interest indie film buffs and psychology majors. It might have been pretty spiffy metahumor if the cameraman, rather than Karpovsky himself, was credited as the film's writer/director. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
