Critics Consensus

It might strike some viewers as a little too pat, but The Blind Side has the benefit of strong source material and a strong performance from Sandra Bullock.

This is a horrid film, and I hated it, and while, I suppose, you can't argue with a true story, you can always argue with the way it is told. Go to Full Review

... I must say that I doubt I'd like the film as much had it not been Christmas and just a plain ole good family flick to see with my mom. Go to Full Review
Richard Brody The New Yorker 01/24/2014
The movie is done with crispness, vigor, down-home humor, and an over-all tang of good feeling, but the pushing of buttons is the work of extraordinary calculation. Go to Full Review

While the film earned Bullock an Oscar, it's a win that comes with a lot of complex and mixed emotions, as her character is a big reason why this film has so many problematic aspects. Go to Full Review

Hancock’s movie feels like an overly schmaltzy Disney production. All the realism of the story has been replaced by heavy sentimentality and scenes that play to audience expectations. Go to Full Review

There's too much emotional manipulation and huge problems seem to get solved a little too easily for it to be 100 percent believable, but it is an entertaining movie anchored by two very good, but very different actors. Go to Full Review

Chris B @Papa13070 1d This movie was amazing and it gives you so much. Sandra Bullock's performance was great, I would actually go so far as saying it was her best ever. I really think she might get an Oscar for it this year. The real Leigh Anne was born just so that Sandra Bullock could play her in this movie. She was dead on throughout the whole movie. If you haven't seen it you have to. I usually get really bored watching true life stories but this one kept me interested thru out the whole movie. If there was such a thing as a perfect movie, this would be it. Great plot, Amazing actors, Talented directors, etc. Go and see it. And I really think both men and women will like this one. It has a very sensitive touch but still it has a lot of funny moments and it has football in it. See more Peninnah Z @RT68923912 4d The Blind Side was such a heartwarming movie. I really liked how it highlighted kindness, support, and the impact one family can have on someone’s life. It also showed the importance of believing in people even when others overlook them. Very emotional and inspiring to watch. See more Mariana T @M.Tezeta Apr 3 It's good, but nothing more. It's moving, but not enough to stay with you for life. In short, it's a simple film, but very good. The ability to convey this story with great empathy stems from a straightforward script and Bullock's bold performance. The characters are well-developed, and the emotions they evoke become complex. Because, of course, you empathize with them, but then you wonder, is any kind of discrimination in society ever justified, or just normalized? It touches on very sensitive issues in the best way. However, I also don't think it should have been chosen as one of the best films of the year. Many might criticize it for being a film from a white perspective and argue that there are better films that address the same topic. However, even though we advocate for more diverse films now, it's also necessary to understand this perspective, which this film immortalizes in a simple, family-friendly drama See more Gregory A @Gregolego Apr 2 some good moments, some white saviors See more Tina G @Tina19 Feb 16 I liked it. Good story, great actors. See more Swaus G @SwausGebouwen Feb 14 It lies about a true story. Quite a lot. And i can never get behind a movie which lies about real history. Wasn't all sunshine and roses, and the protagonist wasn't adopted by the family in real life. Just search for what Michael Oher said about his experiences to get a full picture of why this film is a bit... icky. It's pretty enjoyable and well constructured, but it's a lie nonetheless.
