Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Most of the movie is 3-3.5 stars, however by the end it's really taken you on an original, high quality ride. It's a little slow at times but that's fine because it's a realistic movie here. A few of the cg shots are distractingly flawed, but the movie as a whole has a great look. The non-fantasy action is pretty interesting and the philosophy of the Mozi is fantastically interesting and amazing to research. For the movie though, I'm comfortable leaving it at a very strong 4.0. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review ma'ark t The highlight of this movie is the military strategy. There is a deeper message here than just warfare as well. The plot has some interesting twists but perhaps unnecessary so as well. Not as good as 'Red Cliff'. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Kein Martialarts-Film aber eben doch sehr abgehakt in der Erzählweise Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member When a city state comes under siege by a conquering army commanded by a celebrated strategist, they meet their match in the form of a pacifist warrior dispatched by a friendly nation to aid their allies. With Andy Lau as its star and Jacob Cheung, the action director of Hero, at the helm you expect something pretty spectacular from Battle Of Wits, but despite its epic scale and inventive battle sequences it seems more interested in lecturing the viewer on the dubious morality of warfare than anything else. This means that Cheung spends at least as much time and energy on pseudo intellectual and rather naive waffle as playing to his strengths so that even when visual spectacle and action comes to the fore it's not long before it's interrupted for yet another ham-fisted speech to remind us that "killing is bad". It does have its moments but Cheung confuses sentimentality and manipulation for drama and the characters never feel like real people; just ciphers to get his rather clumsy point across. Some may find the battle sequences worth the rather long winded effort, but Red Cliff did something very similar and did it a lot better. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A rather good movie, all in all, particularly the series of siege tactics - pretty true to the period. Andy Lau did a good job in delivering the pacifist consultant that is the protagonist of the movie. The ending is a little sad, but necessary for wars aren't "pretty" and "perky" and should not be "neat". Too many Hollywood productions are just that way and thus, unrealistic.
