I attempted to watch this movie but after the first 15 minutes found myself having a hard time even getting into it. The vibe from the very beginning, for a movie set in a modern era and with modern themes, was so very 80s, and not in the good way like most gorefest slashers, but a next door neighbor is a cross between Ned Flanders and David Wooderson (McConaughy's Dazed and Confused character).
It was just... bad.

This movie was surprisingly entertaining. It had it all: atheist lesbians, slutty but self-righteous Catholic daughter, bi-racial other daughter, haunted house, possessed dummy, exorcism, hot frat boy--what's not to like? I'm into it.

If I'm being completely honest, this isn't nearly as bad of a movie as one might have assumed based on the incredibly cheap look and vibe the film had. Of course, that's not saying that the movie is good or anything, but it's a little bit better than I definitely was expecting. The morale of the story is to always go in with low expectations when it comes to films, particularly cheap horror movies like this. This isn't anything more than just an ok movie and, conceptually speaking, it's every haunted house horror film you have ever seen. Old guy dies, the neighbors believe it is haunted by his spirit, new couple moves into the house, after a little while, they, or at least Heather's daughter, start experiencing strange events that lead her to believe the old man really is haunting the house. The stupidest thing about the movie, to me, is that Carrie, Heather's daughter, a super religious fanatic who's struggling to come to terms with her mother coming out as a lesbian and marrying another woman, has this guy, assuming it's her boyfriend, come over to watch a movie when she's supposed to be babysitting for Tia, her mother's wife's daughter. Carrie is a little bit altered due to the fact that her bible disappeared and other strange events have been occurring. This guy, to console her, does a Google search and finds out some information about an exorcism they can perform. They then perform this exorcism, which leads to things becoming worse naturally. The stupid thing about this is the fact that, as far as I know, exorcisms are performed for demons and demonic possession, not necessarily spirits of a deceased person. I mean, how does an exorcism even work in that case? Maybe it also works with spirits, I don't really care too know too much about that stuff. It is what it is and that's how they got to where they wanted to go, I just felt it still came across as silly. This may have been better than I expected, but it's got major problems. The movie, realistically speaking, has nothing happening for, maybe, 75% of it. It's got a major lack of excitement, like I can imagine people just falling asleep while watching this. And there's no real horror to speak of, just a bunch of cheap jump scares. Sometimes there's jump scares that, while cheap, still do fit in within the film's own context. But, in this one, it doesn't make sense whatsoever. It's just Tia, Samantha's daughter, going around trying to scare people. It's stupid and its annoying. And Tia, as a character, is just absolutely fucking insufferable. You just don't like her, at all. And, in the long run, the film centers around Tia as a character and Carrie's attempts to help save her from this 'spirit' that's haunting them. So, if she was meant to be the focus of Carrie's motivations, then why make her so goddamn unlikable. I know the idea is that she's a kid, so, instantly, you're meant to be sympathetic to her, but that's not how it works. This isn't real life, I'm not gonna be sympathetic to an insufferable character, even if she's a child. And not to mention the fact that the actress that plays Tia is just fucking terrible, just awful. Though this can be excused due to the fact that she's a really young kid and it's rare for kids that age to be past a certain level when it comes to acting talent. She was still terrible, but I can forgive that more than how her character was written. Everyone else was pretty decent. Even Heather Langenkamp, who, when last I saw here, wasn't very good. She's gotten better, so that's good. The film has a twist that you can see coming a mile away. They lead you to believe it's one person haunting the house, when really it's another. By process of elimination, really, it's super fucking easy to figure out who it is. But, at least, they try to make sense out of their own twist. It doesn't always work, but other movies would just not bother to try and give an explanation. With that said, though, while this film was better than I expected, it's still a below average. It's just very flawed, with nonsensical jump scares, cheap special effects (that I forgot to mention), thinly plotted storyline and unlikable characters. Wouldn't really recommend it, but it could've been so much worse, that's for damn sure.
