Christian M Some over-reliance on certain practical effects, & there are elements that wear a little thin. Otherwise, this is a mad, spasmodic, oozing, infuriating, & inspired picture for those into that sort of thing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Wayne K I’ve read a review where someone describes 964 Pinocchio as a fairytale. You know the classic story: Boy meets girl, girl teaches boy how to speak, boy falls in love with girl, girl betrays boy, boy is heartbroken, girl forces boy to wear shackles and drag a huge rock around everywhere he goes, boy and girl scream a lot and eventually merge together to become more powerful than they could ever dream of being. Tale as old as time! I watched Tetsuo: The Iron Man not long ago, and while I wasn’t he biggest fan of it, I did at least enjoy its unconventional analysis of our occasionally parasitic relationship with technology. But I can’t for the life of me work out what 964 is all about. The film owes a lot to both Cyberpunk and Kabuki theatre. The performances from every actor is so over the top and lung burstingly loud that it just becomes irritating after a while, and some scenes, namely characters walking or running with ear-piercing music paying in the background, go on for an absurd amount of time. It’s far more confusing than it is profound or meaningful, and with the cinematography and poor lighting, its often difficult to even see what’s happening. If you can make it to the end without zoning out or skipping parts, then you have far more patience than me, but I don’t imagine many people will have seen this one, or have any interest in doing so in the future.
