What to Know

Critics Consensus

It isn't as much fun as an official Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time, but A Christmas Story Christmas remains a sequel worth celebrating.

Audience Says

As sweet and nostalgic as the yuletide season itself, A Christmas Story Christmas should be happy holiday viewing for fans of the original.

Like its predecessor, it is enjoyably episodic, jumping from one comic vignette to another. Some of these connect, while others land with a thud. But so it goes with Christmas. Not every present is a winner. Go to Full Review

Lou C @LouCart 5d I watched it was when it was first released, me my brother (Ralphie) and his kids & mine watched it for the first time all being huge fans of the Original......we All Enjoyed it! The ending was excellent and well received. I even felt a bit emotional at times...with all of its nostalgia and the re-Connection.... For me and my older brother, who discovered the original as kids right around the same age as Ralphie And Randy, immediately ranked it amongst our favorite movies... right next to it's a wonderful Life... This sequel paid wonderful homage to the original, well done cast! It fit just right... And it made me and my brother warm and fuzzy... And guess what the new generation our kids loved it too! We were a bit disappointed that Melinda Dillon didn't reappear, but we understood because the months following the viewing when we lost her... She was absolutely brilliant in the Original.... Something tells me, this movie will rank higher as the years go on as it deserves ... Ralphie returns home as a grown man, which is weird because in my brain he’s still that kid in the pink bunny suit committing war crimes on a frozen flagpole. Now he’s dealing with real adult problems: grief, failure, holiday pressure, and trying desperately not to traumatize his kids with the same Christmas chaos he grew up with. (Spoiler: he fails. Spectacularly.) The movie is funny because, honestly, Ralphie is just every dad two days before Christmas—panicked, sweaty, and trying to hide the fact he forgot to buy half the presents. The man is one bad moment away from crying in a mall bathroom. But the emotional gut punches? Oh, they’re here. When the film talks about loss, family, and trying to live up to someone you love, it hits harder than a frozen BB ricocheting off a metal target. Suddenly you’re laughing one minute and the next you’re thinking about your own dad, your childhood Christmases, and whether therapy should come with candy canes. Still, the heart of the movie absolutely lands. It’s warm, nostalgic, and somehow makes you feel like your own messy family traditions are worth holding onto—even the weird ones you pretend you don’t like. Final Verdict: A funny, heartfelt holiday sequel that will make you laugh, cry, and maybe call your family… or at least text them a meme so it seems like you’re emotionally stable. See more Mandy K Dec 2 A Christmas Story left big shoes to fill, but this "sequel" brings the nostaglia, the feel-goods, and the quotables. It does not feel like a traditional sequel, more like a non-comparable "continuation", and has quickly become a holiday favourite in and of itself. Sure, some parts are clunky (the caroling scene, the "daydreams", the casting of ditzy Julie Hagerty as competent Mother Parker) and didn't relate to the original (The Old Man being the Greatest Christmas Ringmaster?)... but the redemption of Scut Farkus, the return of Flick & Schwartz, and the entire last 15 minutes will bring a tear or two to your eye. Especially if you are an adult finding yourself making the magic through grief. See more Tammi S Nov 25 Great story. Almost as good as original. Definitely a great movie to watch at Christmas time! See more Chuck K Oct 13 There are times within this movie that really bring my generation crashing into warm but bittersweet reality...watching Peter Billingsley and company as old people...and realizing you are old too. But, that's part of the joy. The world that the legendary Bob Clark created lives on in this, and it looks exactly as the 70s would look from his lens, in my opinion. Everything feels tactile, breaking down, cheap, and dirty, and those are compliments, believe me. It's because it feels REAL. It also does a great job of capturing the slightly cracked whimsy of the original, and that's a joy as well. A few things don't work, a few of the jokes don't land, and some of the casting isn't perfect. But that's okay. What DOES work, without fail, is Billingsley himself. He inhabits the role with a presence and love that feels like both a love letter to the role that made him famous, and a demonstration that, had he chosen to keep acting in more than bit parts, instead of becoming a very successful producer, he would have been truly great. One moment in particular was a scene that I will carry with me forever, because it drove everything: the story, my life growing up with the first one as a beloved tradition, Billingsley's forever connection to the role, and the thunderous absence of Darren McGavin...home. In that moment, I realized what a talent Billingsley was, and why he is behind such massive movements in Hollywood. Will it be as enduring as the original? Probably not. But that's okay. It does what it was supposed to do with class, skill, and a TON of heart. See more Read all reviews
