What to Know

Critics Consensus

It isn't as much fun as an official Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time, but A Christmas Story Christmas remains a sequel worth celebrating.

Audience Says

As sweet and nostalgic as the yuletide season itself, A Christmas Story Christmas should be happy holiday viewing for fans of the original.

Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Like its predecessor, it is enjoyably episodic, jumping from one comic vignette to another. Some of these connect, while others land with a thud. But so it goes with Christmas. Not every present is a winner. Nov 25, 2022 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times It’ll make for a warm double helping of Christmas nostalgia. Avalynn J it was good and i like it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Stephen C LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Matt B I watched it immediately after watching the original "Christmas Story" and it captures the vibe and look of the original quite well. Peter Billingsley clearly kept touch with his childhood self because his Ralphie is the star of the show. I particularly like his narrations, his internal voice, which I felt matched the wit of the first movie. Having as much of the original supporting cast return was great, in particular I felt the growth of Scott Farkus was a wholesome twist. The plot revolving around Ralphie chasing the ghost of The Old Man, who STILL saves Christmas was a good way to do a sequel. I did remove one full star from my ranking for my only complaint: the first movie is far more funny. This one only got a few chuckles out of me but it's still interesting and, in my opinion, a classic in its own right. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Tim O As a *massive fan* of the original - watch w my wife every xmas season - and *non-fan* of the garbage 2012 'cash-in' effort, I came to this one with *well-lowered* expectations. I'm happy to say I'm pleased with the results. Does it completely capture Jean Shepard's wry humor & narrative delivery? No. But it's definitely aiming for those targets, and very conscious of the original's legacy. It's not quite then original, but it's trying an awful lot, and the results are not too far off the mark. Excellent choice, like the original, to place the film in the "distant" past - 1973/the 70s - in a period with its own distinct - and now "foreign" - world & music. Helps ensure the film remains _timeless_, and doesn't become another "modernized" cringeworthy product of today's sensitivities and tropes. The 70s is far enough back, and notoriously familiar, as a cultural icon, that folks can either remember the era, or are at least familiar enough with, "The Land of Plastic Clothes & Harvest Gold Kitchens", to enjoy the contrasts. This is very much an Old Home Week nostalgia experience: 99% of the original cast is back. The original house is the setting, and we get a solid effort at revisiting old familiar friends. Even Darren McGavin quietly populates the background of most scenes. Heh. Ralph, is still an un-matured Man Child, full of daydreams & flights of fantasy. And like the original, this film still depicts his struggling efforts to cope with life's challenges. Now, how to deliver the type of memorable Xmas his old man delivered, for his own children. Loaded with so many call backs - they actually *re-reference* them in side by side shots in the trailing credits. And refreshingly, this is a time capsule of a now gone era: it's a movie in the older style. It depicts humor and period, without the need to "reimagine" itself into blunt-force anachronism, to please "modern proclivities". It just tells a story, entertains for a bit, and raises its share of smiles. Would I like to see more of Ralphy's friends & family down the road, from this group? Absolutely! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/24 Full Review Eddie F A typical Hollywood attempt at capitalizing off the original. But Pales in comparison. Uninteresting, contrived, boring story that relies too much on piggybacking on the first film. The time period / costume design is also confusing with 70’s inspired wardrobe with a modern spin, really breaking the immersion. It was interesting to see some of the characters all grown up though. Watch the original instead. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Quinn R Enjoyed seeing the actors all grown up and the references to the OG. But outside of that just a dumb, cheesy movie.
