Chase Hutchinson The Inlander (Spokane, WA) From the moment you're dropped into A Lien, the confined but effective portrait of the casual cruelties of the American immigration system as seen through the eyes of a single family, you hardly have a moment to even catch your breath. Gregory W 14 minutes that will leave you feeling shook about this country’s immigration process. I think I need a few minutes to compose myself. This ranks up there with Two Distant Strangers as one of the most poignant and upsetting but important-to-see shorts I’ve ever watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/25 Full Review Dan G We went to a screening of all the Oscar nominated shorts last night in Hollywood FL. This film grabbed our attention and pulled at our heartstrings because of the current situation of our government hell bent on sending immigrants back even though they are at the finish line of gaining legal status. It was an emotional rollercoaster and in just 15 minutes told a gripping story . We can’t wait to see which film of the five that we saw last night wins an Academy Award. This one is definitely worthy of such acclaim. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Jonathan K Wow, that was intense. It's a drama, but it feels almost like a documentary at times, just because of how shockingly real the events are. I had no idea this kind of thing even happened: families being torn apart by ICE, all through this manipulative practice of luring undocumented immigrants to green card interviews, only to arrest them when they show up. You can't help but feel outraged for these people who are just trying to do the right thing and end up having their lives destroyed. It’s unbelievable, really. Just another of the many things that make you wonder what the hell is wrong with this country. As for the film itself, it's so well done. The acting is solid, and the tension is off the charts. You can almost feel the stress of the characters, and I'm sure that’s exactly what the filmmakers wanted to convey with the interspersed shaky cam style. It hits all the notes it’s supposed to, and while it’s heavy, it's definitely effective in what it's trying to show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Read all reviews
