A Quiet Place Part II: Featurette - The Wait is Over
Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.
Sound. Lot's of sound.
That was the biggest impression I had from the opening sequence of A Quiet Place 2. Where the original begins in near complete silence, 89 days after the "sound-monster" apocalypse, the sequel starts on Day One with the "noisy" daily routine of the dynamic duo of real-life husband and wife John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, demonstrating their split-second survival instincts as "shit gets real" in a matter of minutes.
But back to the use of sound in both movies. When I first saw the original Quiet Place in 2018, I could still hear perfectly in my good ear (the other one crapped out on me 20 years ago). Nine months ago I lost a chunk of hearing in that good ear and have since started wearing hearing aids. That personal experience was brought to life in the excellent use of sound -- normal sound, no sound and the "sound of silence," sound from the perspective of someone that is completely deaf.
I normally would talk about "the experience of WATCHING a movie," but since I've started reviewing actively and losing my hearing, it's become the experience as a WHOLE - in my ability to be both immersed and entertained.
And boy was this entertaining. The opening sequence once the "apocalypse" begins is just fantastic. In fact every scene that features an encounter with the "sound-monsters" is gripping and intense. The budget was clearly increased significantly so we get many more of those scenes. Those creatures looked wickedly good.
Unfortunately, the drawback of having the first and third acts be non-stop action, the middle arc drags and feels like a slog. And it puts a spotlight on the stupid decisions the teens make that puts everybody in jeopardy.
The kids were angsty and annoying. Just like in the first movie, the younger brother was one dimensional and had a constant freaked out look like he was going to crap his pants at any second.
The acting is mostly excellent. New addition Cillian Murphy, the GOAT of Danny Boyle's apocalypses (28 Days Later and Sunshine) is a good replacement for Krasinski's character-- similar but different -- a survivor that's slowly losing it.
There is so much potential for world-building based on new info provided about the "monster invasion" in part two.
SPOILERS
The "sound-monsters" crash land in a big meteor, asteroid or spaceship. They then immediately go on a seek and destroy mission killing anything that makes a noise. They never eat their prey -- just killing as many as they could. Almost like planet-wide exterminators. They were already fully formed when they arrived so its more likely a spaceship that crash landed. And if so, is the purpose to wipe out all living things for a future alien invasion?
All of which makes A Quiet Place Part III very compelling. I'm intrigued and want more.
There are enough tension fueled set pieces to see you through to the end. However expanding the world of the original does have its drawbacks, namely that it invites more questioning of the plot mechanics which were already a little flimsy and derivative.

It's as suspenseful and thrilling as the first, maybe even more so but it's missing the sense of discovery that made the original so captivating.
The first film managed to weave creative world building organically into plot devices. Whereas this second installation just has the cast tread boringly through a rather generic post-apocalyptic if not for the cheap frights.
Also weaker character stories/themes and relationships overall give this film less of an emotional punch than it's predecessor.
It's serviceable add-on content, sure. It really makes me hope for an improved Part 3 to give the franchise a better legacy to be remembered by.

More than anything, I was actually quite nervous (even though deliriously excited) to see a sequel to A Quiet Place. It was one of my absolute favourite films of 2018 and even though the ending was sort of left open, I just thought every aspect of the filmmaking made for a stellar film. Not that a sequel needs to be better, but when you have a movie that good, it's very hard to even make something that comes remotely close. Well, I personally think that director John Krasinski came incredibly close to topping himself here. Even though I would probably still choose the first one over this sequel as to which I prefer, this felt like a seamless continuation and felt like an extension that was just as good as its predecessor. Here's why I believe A Quiet Place Part II will remain one of my favourite films of 2021 until the end of the year.
Beginning with one of the best opening scenes I've witnessed in a while and then jumping back into the main story, picking up moments after the conclusion of the previous instalment, I was hooked from the very beginning. Everything about this sequel feels like a natural progression. From the way the camera moves to how the sound cuts in and out when the film is focused on the daughter Regan (still played wonderfully by Millicent Simmonds), the atmosphere is still pulse-pounding. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Never once did I feel the film dragging. Although very limited on dialogue, I still found the film to be saying a lot.
Without diving into too much detail here, this film follows the Abbott family after they have left their home. So of course, it's only natural that Krasinski would craft a screenplay that would widen his vision. Running into Emmett (Cillian Murphy), the remaining family members find a new spot to seek shelter. Having no belief that anything or anyone is worth saving out in the world, there's a lot of denials to be had. I loved Cillian Murphy as this character and without ruining anything, his chemistry with Millicent Simmonds had me in tears on multiple occasions, making it the true heartbeat of the film.
Overall, I can't do anything but gush about every aspect of this film. From the magnificent sound design by the sound department to the stellar camerawork by Polly Morgan, to the score by Marco Beltrami that felt like he just continued his work from the first film, down to the fantastic writing and directing by John Krasinski, my eyes were superglued to the screen. This is filmmaking at its finest and I can't wait to watch it again. The tension was never-ending and I feel that even if you mildly enjoyed the first film, you'll at least feel that way about this one. A Quiet Place Part II is the very definition of how to make a successful sequel.
