Widowed father Carl Gallitzin (Charles Durning) is faced with the task of raising three children alone, one of whom, the 14-year-old Matthew (George Parry), is mentally challenged. When Matthew becomes frustrated with the difficulties of his daily life, the boy's father enrolls him in an institution where he develops a love for athletics. With the support of fellow students and instructors, Matthew begins to excel at sports. Eventually, his newfound talent lands him in the Special Olympics.
