What to Know

Critics Consensus

A Walk Among the Tombstones doesn't entirely transcend its genre clichés, but it does offer Liam Neeson one of his more compelling roles in recent memory, and that's often enough.

Kate Erbland Film.com Frank's film is much more of a noir outing than a straight action feature, and Neeson slips right into the tone and feel of the hard-boiled detective offering. Rated: 8.1/10 Jan 6, 2015 Full Review Joe McGovern Entertainment Weekly As a throwback to a type of nasty, ugly crime film of yesteryear, A Walk Among the Tombstones cleans up. Rated: B Jan 6, 2015 Full Review Inkoo Kang TheWrap As nauseating as the film's inventive sadisms can be, Frank succeeds far more in the details than in the larger picture that tries to relate this world to ours. Jan 6, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's an appealing, engaging, and solidly assembled picture with style to spare, and here's hoping it's not the last time Frank and Neeson bring Scudder to the screen. Rated: 3/4 Jul 25, 2022 Full Review Kip Mooney Central Track What makes A Walk Among the Tombstones so satisfying is the script and direction of Scott Frank. Aug 10, 2021 Full Review Dan Brightmore NME (New Musical Express) David Harbour's villain really is a nasty piece of work with a twisted line in torture. Jeff K Liam Nelson hunts down a couple sadistic serial killers in a film noir action movie. I would've preferred they made it more of a mystery than action movie, but it was entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Lavish C [SPOILERS WARNING!] First of all, I think that Liam is one of the worst actors of his generation. Somehow it worked for him in Schindler's list, and in Taken, maybe he was well cast in something else that I didn't watch, but per se he just can NOT act. His facial paralysis might be even worse than Keanu's. Now the movie. Wannabe-stylistic but ultimately just presumptuous. A very useless, tired, old, incapable ex police turned cop because of some vendetta he went on while drunk. Now got hired as private detective to find who killed his client's wife. Some wannabe-clever subplots just to make it look like the writer actually made some effort, but they are dumb attempts which have no substance and leads nowhere. The killers kill again. Then kidnap a girl. He gets hired via recommendation from his previous client to negotiate. Things go awry, they escape, they had cut the 14 y/o fingers without any reason, now they shoot dead his previous client's brother, he shoots one of them, they still escape, a kid from one of the two useless subplots irresponsibly hid in their truck and almost got discovered, but so can tell them where their base is. The one who got shot gets killed by the other one just like that, no other reason. They arrive. He handcuff the dude to a metal pipe. The previous client stays to kill the dude although he, as ex cop, disagrees and leaves. But then he comes back and for some demented reason the client has uncuffed the criminal and he's dead. He gets plummeted badly because he's useless. But he has a taser and stuns the dude and shoots him the head. In other words, not only the two bastardy killed 2 women, cut the fingers of a girl, and this last dude killed his victim's husband now, but they both went out easily, just one bullet. The last one in the head, no pain. What I hate the most in a movie centered on revenge, is when the revenge doesn't arrive. There's no reason for this movie to exist. It's a mistake. Like the fact that Liam still acts. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review David H Why is hollywood so determined to push the envelope of disgusting graphic sadism? Are they trying to convince us that normal people actually behave this way? Or do they just want to discredit, degrade and destroy our moral sensibilities? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Faiz D One of Liam Neeson's best. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review mark g I have to admit, some of the choices Neeson had made around this time were questionable, so I didn't know what to expect. But boy was this one different. Make no mistake, dark as hell. This movie is not for the squeamish, many scenes are disturbing. But the direction is excellent and Neeson is on top of his game. Moreover, the two bad guys personify evil like few others in recent memory. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Matthew D A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) is better than I remembered. One of the strongest Liam Neeson films and performances from him in the past decade. Dan Stevens, Boyd Holbrook, and David Harbour are excellent in their supporting roles. Scott Frank's dark neo-noir direction is ruthless with a truly bleak worldview. The detailed and nihilistic writing makes for an engaging mystery. Fair warning, the serial killers are very disturbing to watch. It holds up nicely. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
