Marie (Anastasia Hille), a film producer, returns to her native Russia to find her birth parents. She quickly learns they are dead, and she has inherited their long-empty farmhouse. At the farm, she meets Nicolai (Karel Roden), who claims to be her twin brother. Events take a terrifying turn when the two spot a pair of ghastly doppelgangers and the house itself seems to propel them toward a fate they should have met 40 years earlier.

When she finds out her mom has died, she travels to a town where you have to "cross the bridge" to get there. And when she does, she never comes back - because the ghosts of the past won't let her go. The ending is actually one of the redeeming qualities.

The Abandoned isn't short on effective atmosphere and there are some thought-provoking ideas somewhere under the surface, but between the dizzying camerawork, a not particularly interesting lead character, and an inability to handle the philosophy it's trying so hard to present, The Abandoned never takes off enough to warrant a recommendation.
