John Doyle Globe and Mail The doc is made by her husband, Andy Ostroy, and it is a glowing tribute, an act of grieving. Mar 18, 2022 Full Review Kristen Lopez indieWire Adrienne is a beautiful testament to the power of Adrienne Shelly and will hopefully inspire fans, new and old, to revisit her work. Bring tissues. Rated: B+ Feb 7, 2022 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal Andy Ostroy, the film's producer and director, is also a widower walking a tightrope, and he does so successfully most of the time. Dec 2, 2021 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times A semi-Southern gothic hybrid of “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Waitress” finds Shelly delicately balancing the sweet and the tart (both literally and figuratively) and it is an amazing examination of the human condition. Rated: 4/5 Jun 1, 2022 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Devastating. NYC is dangerous town. Rated: FOUR STARS Mar 26, 2022 Full Review Milana Vujkov Lola On Film The aspect of Adrienne that is pure cinema - the footage, small triumphs, haunted encounters (...) is truly chilling and stellar in its rawness and fortitude. Simon T Andy Ostroy's loving tribute to his wife, actress-author-director Adrienne Shelley is blessed with his own courage and sensitivity and Shelley's evident humour and quirky beauty (similar to Rosanna Arquette). They had a wonderful marriage and produced a beautiful daughter, Sophie. Her apparent suicide and Andy's determination to find the truth are the spine of the movie, and it's very clear how grief has hollowed him out. It is overlong, but that's understandable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Sue C "Adrienne" is the true story of an American dream that was suddenly and selfishly ended by a monstrous criminal act. The moral of Adrienne' Shelly's murder is that any one of us at any moment can be the victim of a crime. Although I was intrigued by the woman's rise to fame in the film industry and her happy home life, I came away with unanswered questions - why, for instance, did Adrienne require an office that looked like a home away from home? Did she leave her front door unlocked while she was there? Why did her killer take $13,500 from his mother in Equador and then felt driven to steal and kill? After doing years of prison time, was he repentant or only sorry for himself? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful. Almost unbearably sad. What a tremendous waste of a vibrant, loving human being. I felt for everyone, even the man who took her life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A wonderful tribute to his wife, capturing her joy and spirit. Even in tragedy, you come away feeling hopeful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I did know of Adrienne Shelly and always loved her movies. This was Amazingly intimate and heartbreaking to see a family after her life was needlessly taken.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I did know who Adrienne Shelly was, as I had seen some of her indie films back in the 90s and took notice of the fairy-like actress. I recalled seeing her in ‘Waitress' and was surprised to find out that she was also the filmmaker. Years later, I heard that she had been murdered and was sad to think that this recognizable, ethereal woman had been taken in such a horrible way. When her face appeared on HBO Max, I was looking forward to seeing the documentary that her husband made to honor her memory. However, I did not expect to be taken on such a powerfully moving, heartbreaking journey. Wow, he did an outstanding job of using footage and interviews to weave us through her life. He showed a smart, tough, hard working, artist; but also a grounded, loving woman. Then, when sharing footage about her murder and the aching loss of her life, viewers feel like we are a part of a tight fabric being ripped apart. I could not stop crying. I will forever be haunted by this beautiful movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
