Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Sachin Kundalkar's whose Marathi Gandha did this infinitely better, doesn't manage the reprise, and what we get is a flat, heavy-footed clomp through screechy lines and overstated, dragged-out situations. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 22, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Akshay G "Aiyyaa" – A Bold, Quirky Gem Ahead of Its Time When Aiyyaa released in 2012, it was marketed as a rom-com, but in reality, it was an experimental, genre-blending film that didn’t quite fit into Bollywood’s usual mould. That mismatch is perhaps why many viewers didn’t fully appreciate what they were watching. But revisit it today, and you’ll find a movie that’s way ahead of its time — unapologetically bizarre, refreshingly female-driven, and visually vibrant. Rani Mukerji delivers one of her most uninhibited performances as Meenakshi, a dreamer with a rich fantasy life. The way the film blends her inner Bollywood-inspired daydreams with the dullness of her real life is not just hilarious but also a unique narrative device in Hindi cinema. It’s rare to see a female protagonist whose desires, quirks, and agency are portrayed with such honesty and humour. Prithviraj Sukumaran is magnetic without many dialogues — his presence alone builds intrigue. The film’s music by Amit Trivedi is a masterpiece in itself — playful, experimental, and eclectic, with songs like Aga Bai and Dreamum Wakeupum perfectly capturing the eccentricity of the story. Yes, Aiyyaa is strange — and that’s the point. It celebrates absurdity, embraces cultural mash-ups, and tells a love story from a female gaze, something Bollywood still struggles with today. If it released now, in the age of streaming and niche audiences, it would likely be celebrated for its audacity and offbeat charm. For those willing to go beyond the formulaic and dive into a colourful, quirky world, Aiyyaa is a hidden gem worth rediscovering. Verdict: Underrated, bold, and bursting with personality — a cult classic in the making Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review Audience Member I LOVED this movie ???????. It is an adorable fantasy movie and so funny. I especiall love the song "Dreamum Wakeupum". I had no idea Rani Mukherjee was such a good dancer. Prithviraj is hottttt!!!! ??. I will probably watch it again. What a wonderful light hearted movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Rani is just gorgeous!!! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Rani has worked pretty hard for the film, but the outcome is not that good in all the scenes, specially the ones wherein she imitates famous (read 'sentimental' for movie buffs) scenes and dance sequences of Sri, Madhuri and Juhi. However the emotion of 'complete bliss of innocence' is well captured by her in many scenes. The director's effort of showcasing regional sensibility needs lot of fine tuning. Actually this is not an easy task, and thus Mani Ratnam is considered a pro. A short narration about Rani's sensitivity towards 'smell' in the beginning of the film would have saved the audience a lot of confusion, since most of them would be unaware of the director's previous work 'Gandha'. Malayalam actor Prithviraj looks good and supporting characters are designed to be very loud! Last but not the least, good effort Rani. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member The small-town movie is charming to start with, with its unusual everyday story, real life but weird characters and the garish, tacky use of old movies. Yet,the laughters dry up quickly with umpteen repetitions and a stagnant story - what is cute and novel soon becomes the same thing lasting whole movie-length. The movie would have been better with a story that moved even somewhat. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Dont watch this instead, watch the original marathi movie "Gandha" (Smell) which is far more superior work of the director Kundalkar. Those two star are for Amit trivedi and Vaibhavi Merchant each. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
