      Critics Consensus

Well-acted but uneven, All Is Bright strands a pair of strong performances from Paul Giamatti and Paul Rudd in a meandering script.

Michael K All is Bright is a wonderful little movie. It is also not a comedy like Deck the Halls or Bad Santa, as some have mentioned and as it seems to have been advertised. Its more like "Christmas a la John Sayles." With this misconception out of the way, people can enjoy it for what it is : a well done story with very good writing and acting. The gritty atmosphere (a shady corner in New York) and tone are stark contrast to what one expects from a Christmas movie, and it makes it hard to guess how the two will handle their misfortunes as they come. The soundtrack's jazz piano interpretations of carols was perfect and the ending a satisfying surprise. This is one to put on when you've exhausted your supply of required seasonal viewing and want something fresh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review Michaël M I am a French Canadian, but I prefer to call myself 'Quebecois.' Honestly, that movie is quite off and boring. The Quebec accent is absent, and people with a French accent are speaking in the French from France style. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review daniel k Paul Rudd was in this movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review kevin c Paul Giamotti plays a man just released from a four year stint in prison during which time his wife divorced him and told their kid he was dead, and his partner in crime, played by Paul Rudd is now seeing her. He reluctantly goes into business with Rudd traveling from Quebec to New York to sell Christmas trees to make honest money. This was a decent film with two leads I really like, the story was interesting but something seemed to be missing from it. I enjoyed it but think it could have been better. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member All is bright is a quirky little dark comedy. The performances from Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti are good and the movie has some good dialogue and laughs. It’s not the heist film that you think it is except more of a character study. It can be a little slow moving at times but overall it’s a fun little quirky watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/21 Full Review Audience Member It was okay. It was a little too long. I lost interest before it was over, but I thought the two Paul's were good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Hoberman ARTINFO.com You might think you can see where Almost Christmas is heading but it never quite loses its acerbic edge or goes emotionally blooey. Oct 7, 2013 Full Review Ronnie Scheib Variety This engaging if somewhat underwhelming tale of unlikely redemption builds a funny-sad web of intersecting interactions around its strong central perfs. Oct 7, 2013 Full Review David N. Butterworth La Movie Boeuf The Two Pauls -- Giamatti and Rudd -- shine in another downbeat ode to humanity from director Phil Morrison ("Junebug"). Rated: 3/4 Jan 4, 2020 Full Review Martin Tsai Critic's Notebook "All Is Bright" is reminiscent of those utterly forgettable Canadian movies bankrolled on the government dime in the name of cultural preservation. Oct 8, 2015 Full Review Clayton Davis AwardsCircuit.com Phil Morrison's direction and choices aren't as bold or as inventive as his styles in Junebug. The story doesn't lend itself to those traits that made him a quiet sensation in the mid-2000s. Rated: 3/4 Sep 14, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews
