Bosley Crowther New York Times Unfortunately, there are too many words and not enough music. Rated: 2.5/5 Feb 3, 2012 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Heaven is film theatre at its best. Feb 3, 2012 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out It's a pretty long, gloomy haul, though lavishly mounted (with photography by Ernest Haller) and sensitively acted. Rated: 4/4 Jan 31, 2012 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews The film was critically acclaimed but because of its overlong 143 minutes and grim story line, it was not the blockbuster the studio hoped for. Rated: B- May 6, 2010 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Anatole Litvak directs with tact and restraint this period melodrama (a woman's picture) about a governess who falls for her employer-nobleman. Davis and Boyer are good, but it's Barbara O'Neil who stands out as Boyer's neurotic and obsessive wife. Rated: B Feb 1, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

Jack B A long and engaging story. And a fine example of why Bette Davis was such an acclaimed actress. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully set, albeit overly long, melodrama with Bette Davis playing the innocent and unworldly governess, suffering the wrath of the lady of the house as the rest of the family becomes more attached to her. Davis was good here but I would have probably preferred her playing the role of Barbara O'Neill as it more resembles the type of character I most enjoy seeing Bette take on. The story was fairly straight forward and could have been sufficiently told in 100 minutes as opposed to the over 140 that this film ran, however the last 30 minutes or so were probably the most engaging for me. *Binging Bette Davis #9 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review steve d Davis is good but the story slides into melodrama. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Betty Davis gives a marvellous performance in this lovely period melodrama. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member With some films you can wait out the length, but this overly-dramatic sweet-as-pie performance from Davis crosses the line. She is a saint and so is Boyer. They do everything right. For hours and hours. Then, she is dismissed. Boyer has no say in this, although he had the only say in who was hired. She can't get a letter of recommendation because it must be from the wife? Try speaking nicely to your wife, buddy. But that would ruin this two-dimensional movie. Meant as a psychodrama for Davis and Boyer, it is tragic at all the wrong times and all you think about is why don't they do (this) instead? Watching with a friend, Davis' movies are akin to Abbott and Costello and you can laugh along with her moody. intentionally dramatic emotional portrayals. Watching alone is harder. But it's still entertainment and Bette Davis was a master at being noticed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The best romance movie ever made!
