Despite its famous cast, the movie lacks sympathetic characters and is only funny in spurts.

David Ansen Newsweek The talented cast works hard to keep this souffle from falling. Because of Roberts, America's Sweethearts is going to be seen by a lot of people. For best results, keep those expectations low. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media So-so sitcom-like story of estranged movie stars. Rated: 2/5 Dec 21, 2010 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 3/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Michael D. Reid Victoria Times Colonist (B.C., Canada) Director Joe Roth's glossy ensemble comedy... should be a laugh riot. It falls short, but has its moments. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Dan DiNicola The Daily Gazette (Schenectady, NY) It's so sad that a movie called America's Sweethearts should leave such a sour taste, that the blindingly brilliant Julia Roberts should be so dull, that nearly every joke from comic genius and co-star Billy Crystal should land with such a thud. Rated: D Apr 30, 2024 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Thanks to Hollywood itself for giving [Billy] Crystal and [Peter] Tolan some of the best scenarios to work with when dealing with the press and gossip fodder. Ian H Classic romcom elevated by a stellar cast who looked like they were enjoying themselves. Feel good Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Jacob B I would've hoped a film like this with quite the all-star cast would've been better than it turned out to be but I found America's Sweethearts to be a bland romcom. Yes, not every film about Hollywood is going to be Notting Hill but I was expecting something better than this cliché storm. To the movie's credit, Billy Crystal does get some good lines in (the fact that he wrote the script back in the '90s is not lost on me), Julia Roberts is likeable in the lead role and, naturally, Christopher Walken was the best part of the film (too bad he and Roberts never interact with each other, not even in deleted scenes) but overall, this film wasn't very funny or compelling. Shame we never saw more clips from those fake movies after the prologue. Those could've been fun. At least do a better job of selling the idea that John Cusack and Catherine Zeta-Jones were once in love with each other, instead of the more biased depiction so that the audience will feel comfortable with the film shipping the former off with Roberts. I don't know what to say, man, I'm grasping at straws to actually write a review about this film that says something more sufficient than "bland and blander" and "go watch the thematically similar (on a surface level) Notting Hill instead". Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Melissa M I thought this movie was absolutely hilarious. Amazing group of actors. The cast was beyond awesome Christopher Walken Alan arkin, John cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal and Seth green. Hank azaria was definitely one of the best parts of the movie. The storyline was original which is something really rare in Hollywood these days. Back when Hollywood had an imagination. Now it's all remakes & sequels. I think it was so awesome that even Larry King had a cameo in the movie. Larry King was surprisingly funny. Who knew? I think Julia Roberts & John Cusack had amazing chemistry. I like that the movie was politically incorrect that was the best part of it. Especially in this PC world we live in now. I would highly recommend this movie. Especially if you want to see something different. And not more of the same stuff Hollywood usually churns out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Kate E It’s cute, light hearted with fun moments. Hank Azaria steals the show, Alan Aron has some great lines. Billy Crystal and Seth Green are great. I watch it often. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Qasim R Don't focus on ratings.its good comedy movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review KEVIN C Fantastic cast in a mediocre romantic comedy. Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack play actors and former husband and wife out doing a press junket. Julia Roberts and Billy Crystal also star and pretty rescue this from being a total disinteresting disaster. Hoped for better considering the cast.
